great reference guide in American kitchens since 1930s
The rst ediBon was released during the great depression
Tons of recipes about preparing wild game, homemade mayo and
cookies of the Bme

The series of cookbooks reect changes in American taste,


cooking techniques and lifestyles.

1930s Be&er Homes and Garden

First EdiBon Cookbook

Timeline
1935: My Be&er Homes and Gardens changed its name to
New Cook Book.

1938: The Tossed Salad was introduced for the rst Bme.
1943: With the start of the Second World War, BHG created
recipes and Bps for growing and yielding from your own
victory garden.
1955: The microwave was introduced to BHG readers.
1956: The series Famous Foods from Famous Places begins,
responding to the trend of families eaBng out more.
1960s: BHG introduces InternaBonal cuisine for the rst Bme.
1972: Natural Foods like granola, honey and yogurt.
1980s and 90s: BHG becomes more health conscience and
creates a diet and health column.

In 1940 the red plaid design was implemented in all the

cookbooks. Also each book was given ring bindings and tab
markers for easy navigaBon and easy access. BHG design crew
is in charge of making design changes. The next big change
was changing the horizontal plaid design to diagonal pa&ern.

Cuisine Changes
Between 1953 and 1996 major changes took place in American
cuisine
In 1953 because of the naBonal highway system Americans began
transporBng processed foods. Eciency became a goal in cooking a
so called cooking style was Jiy Cooking. Dishes were quick but
unhealthy at the Bme.
Aber the ImmigraBon Act of 1965 an inux of ethnic cuisine ooded
America. Americans adapted Italian, Neapolitan, and Asian cuisine.

Gender Role Changes


Early on BHG Cookbooks were centered towards tradiBonal
American families in which the wife does the cooking.
Gender roles shibed in the 1980s and 1990s which led to two
income providers in a family and actudes changed about
womens role. Cookbooks also began to acknowledge male
cooks and dierent aged cooks.
