Russian Revolution

Nicholas II- Became czar in 1894 and continued autocracy in this


region.
Rasputin- A self-proclaimed holy man he believed he had special
healing powers.
Industrialization and growth of Revolutionary movementsindustrialization increased throughout Russia. The growth of the
factories brought new problems like grueling working conditions and
low salaries.
o Bolsheviks- A small number of committed revolutionaries that
would do anything for change.
o Mensheviks-A member of the non-leninist part of the Social
Democratic Party.
o Soviets- Local council consisting of workers, peasants, and
soldiers.
Lenin- Leader of the Bolshevik's he was ruthless yet had a very
engaging personality.
Revolution of 1905
o Russo- Japanese- Russia and Japan competed for control in
which Russian losses sparked unrest and caused revolt in the
midst of the war.
o Bloody Sunday- About 200,000 workers and their families
marched to the Czars winter palace they were asking for better
working conditions and more personal freedoms. Nicholas IIs
generals ordered his soldiers to fire and 1000 people were
wounded and up to several died.
WWI- Russia was unprepared to handle the military and the economic
costs. Russia was no match compared to the German army.
Two Revolutions:
o March Revolution- Women textile workers led a world wide
strike. Alexander Kerensky was the leader of the Provisional
Government which was a temporary government created by
members of the Duma.
o November Revolution- also known as the Bolshevik Revolution
o All Power to the Soviets- People shouted this during the
Bolshevik revolution.
o Bread, Land, and Peace- Lenins campaign slogan.
Treaty of Brest- Litovsk- Russia surrendered a large part of their territory to
Germany and its allies.

Trotsky- Head of the red army. Competed with Stalin for head of the
communist party.
Civil War- The war in Russia between the people who wanted a
democracy and people who wanted a czar back or an autocratic
government.
o White Army- who made up this army? People who wanted to
defeat the Bolsheviks.
o Red Army- who made up this army? The Bolsheviks that
wanted a democratic government.
o Problems? 14 million people died in the 3 year struggle.
o Results? The red army won and the Bolsheviks seized power.
New name Lenin gives to Russia- Soviet Union
