Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 7. EARLY CHILDHOOD FIELD EXPERIENCES
Field experiences and clinical practice are planned and sequenced so that candidates
develop the knowledge, skills and professional dispositions necessary to promote the
development and learning of young children across the entire developmental period of
early childhood in at least two of the three early childhood age groups (birth age 3, 3
through 5, 5 through 8 years) and in the variety of settings that offer early education
(early school grades, child care centers and homes, Head Start programs). (NAEYC,
2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:

As part of several of my Early Childhood Education classes, including ECED 100,
235, and 255, which took place between fall 2013-2015, I completed over 350 hours of
field experience and was evaluated several times. In addition to the field experience
required for these classes, I also worked at a different school, teaching. From the
beginning I knew that I needed to carefully plan my hours so that I could spend four days
a week and three hours a day doing field experience. This meant that I needed to
establish a schedule. The first two classrooms that I was in included children aged four to
five years old, though some of the time I was in the three year old class. For ECED 255 I
worked in a different school doing administrative work. This meant that I worked in
several different offices in the school as well as occasionally helping out in a classroom.
Over the course of my hours I worked with multiple teachers in two different schools,
which gave me several different perspectives toward teaching.

Analysis of What I Learned:

As a result of completing this artifact, I learned that there are several different
teaching styles and that every child learns differently than the one next to them. This
artifact also helped me to learn how to look more professional in the way I dress. When I
first started out in my ECED 100 class, I would wear just nice jeans with a nice t-shirt. By
the time I had completed somewhere around 30 hours, I felt more comfortable wearing
an ironed button-down shirt with a collar and nice black pants.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC

Standard:
This artifact demonstrates my competence on the NAEYC Standard 7, Early
Childhood Field Experience, by showing my ability to gain knowledge, skills, and
professional dispositions while completing clinical practices in a variety of settings with
several different ages. I can use this artifact in my classroom by combining the different

teaching styles I have seen over the last two years and creating my own that works for
me personally as well as my students.
