Stage 3 Learning Plan

Summary of Key Learning Events and Instruction

InourMake a Blue Print of the Gym Basketball Court Lesson we will be making a scale
drawing of the Gym floor. This is a summation of several geometry lessons we have been
covering.

Monday (Saxon , Lesson 9) Perimeter, -D 46 47

Tuesday (Lesson 60) Circles, -D 48 & 59
Wednesday (Lesson 17) Rectangles, -D 50
Thursday (Lesson 65)E 9 Solving Proportions- finding the unknowns
Friday (Lesson 113 inch & metric) E 13 Scale Drawings building to actual measurements

1. Part ONE: We will use the formulas for perimeter and area of different shapes to

create the blueprint. This will help us to identify math in our world by using and
understanding blueprints. Knowing and understanding blue prints will help you to see
how much math is used in construction. You will need to use the following:
a. Use the table provided to log all measurements needed.
b. Write in the correct formula needed for each shape.
c. Draw a rough draft of the floor so you can make a plan before you go to the gym
to do your measuring.
d. Compare your plan with another group.
e. Revise your plan. Do you need to add something? Do you need to change
something?

f. Measure the basketball court, keep track of the measurements in your table.
g. Calculate the measurements using the formulas.
h. Declare your scale you will use. (ratio)
i. Use your ratio to calculate and draw your blue print.
j. Compare your drawing to others in your group as you draw.
k. Compare your drawing to another group.
l. Revise your drawing if you see errors or discrepancies.
m.

Go back to the gym and re-measure if you have to.

2. Part TWO: At the end of the assignment you will present to the class the steps in how
you created your blue print. You will use SCREEN CASTOMATIC to present how do
create a blue print. You will need to be sure to do the following:
a. Show the steps to making your blue print.
b. Show how to use the formulas.
c. If you forget a part, go back and re-act out the part that is missing.
d. Be creative with your presentation.
3. You will be given centimeter square paper or inch square paper for your blue print.

Everyone will be drawing on their own piece of paper. It is okay to help each other
you just arent allowed to write on each others paper.
4. Four groups will be formed, 2 groups with centimeter square paper and 2 groups with
inch square paper.
5. In your group you need to come up with a plan of how you will scale draw the
basketball court onto your paper.
a. Make a list of the different shapes; use a table to keep track of your data. For
example:

6. Plan the steps you will do to measure the basketball court. What tool are you going to
use? Tape measure, tape, how will you go about measuring?
a. Length of the court.
b. Width of the court.
c. Half court line
d. Key at both ends
e. Jump circles
f. Three point lines
g. What are you going to video? With what are you going to video with, camera?
h. What are you going to demonstrate in the video?
i. What is going to be said in the video?
7. Compare your plans with the other group that is working with the same
measurements you are.
a. How are you going to measure for each shape?

b. How are you going to measure for the circle?

c. How are you going to measure for the 3-point line.
d. (Your blueprint should end up identical. We will hold it up to the light to see how
well you did.)
8. Reflect on your plan and the other groups plan.
9. Revise your plan, make changes if you need to.
10.

Lets go to the gym and start.

11.

Each group starts in a corner.

12.

Remember to video as you go. You will edit your video later.

13.
During class time students should have most of the measurements that they
need.
14.
When the measurements are all logged in the table students will go back to the
classroom.
15.
The last column needs to be calculated by using proportions. By estimating how
many meters per centimeter or feet per inch. Students need to decide what their
scale will be and use the scale to calculate the drawing.
16.

Using a ruler the students will draw their calculation on their paper.

17.
When the students see a gross error they will go back to the gym and re-measure
any measurements that they need.
18.
When drawing the jump circles they will use a compass and have to figure out
what half of the diameter of the circle is in order to draw it.
19.
While you are drawing with the dimensions be sure to check each others work.
Be positive and supportive of your co-workers.
20.

When you have completed your drawing compare it to the other group.

21.
Discuss with the other group what you observe in the drawings. Did they come
out perfectly the same? Why? Why not?
22.

Revise and corrections that need to be made.

23.
Complete the video. Make sure each step is in your video. Look at your plan and
check off each step. Identify any errors and any highlights that you might have made,
explain why you made the error.
24.

Do your presentation for the class.

25.

Do an evaluation for each of the presentations in class.

a. Are all the steps to creating a blueprint presented in the video?
b. Are all the formulas done correctly?
c. Is there something they did that you didnt? Or did they do something a different

way?
d. How creative were they with their presentation?
