The award of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is a privilege conferred, as a mark of excellence, on members of the legal profession, who are into full-fledged legal
practice or academics in Nigeria; and have also distinguished themselves as advocates through significant contributions to the development of the legal profession in the country. It is the
equivalent of the rank of Queen's Counsel (QC) in the United Kingdom, from which Nigeria became a Republic in 1963. Some other commonwealth states such as: South Australia and
Canada (except Ontario and Quebec) also confer similar ranks on legal practitioners such as Senior Counsel, State Counsel, Senior Advocate, and President's Advocate etc. Queen's
Counsel in England and Wales metamorphosed from the rank of Sergeant-at-law.

Before 1597, the Attorney-General, Solicitor-General and Kings Sergeants were ordinarily referred to as King's Counsel or Queen's because they acted for the King, until Sir Francis
Bacon was given patent as the first Queen's Counsel, giving him precedence at the Bar. In Nigeria, after the introduction of the rank of SAN, Nigerians who were QCs in England upon
return to Nigeria were automatically conferred with the rank. Meanwhile, QCs continued to be recognized within our legal system even after independence until 1972 when the title
was abolished and in its place the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria was introduced in 1973.
