    Freedom of Speech has limitations.

    Use your common sense. Dont pull the trigger.
    Stay up to date on technology, lingo, and slang.
    A search must be justifiable.
    The more intrusive the search, the more unlawful.
    Students and teachers do not shed their rights at the school
    door.
    8. When dealing with school discipline, try to keep kids in school,
    not kick them out.
    9. Know when you need to contact parents.
    (Not required to contact parents before detaining or
    questioning about school discipline. Parents should be
    notified before law enforcement or CPS visits with student
    at school, unless it involves abuse in the home.)

    5 Action Steps
    1. Find the policy for Lincoln Public Schools on student interviews
    taken place during school hours.
    2. Have a conversation with my immediate supervisor regarding
    her expectations for teachers and dealing with suspicions and
    legal matters regarding school discipline.
    3. Share the information about searching of lockers, bookbags,
    and coats.
    4. Read the student handbook.
    5. Read the Principal Law 101 handout given to us by Jim
    Gessford and Rex Schultze.
