The Code of the Kings Man

The Code of the Kings Man, as illustrated
here on a golden shield, represents the
ultimate goal and purpose of a KingsMan: to
become a willing and able vessel through
which the power of God may accomplish His
perfect will. The Code should be memorized
as soon as possible in your journey to
becoming a Kings Man. It will serve you
well as a reminder of why we do what we do
and Whom we are doing it for.

II.

The Ten Tenets of a Kings Man

What makes a KingsMan a Kings Man? When Jesus said that it is not what goes
into a man that defiles him, but what comes out of him (Matthew 15:11), He made
it clear that a mans character can be defined by his words and actions. To define
the character of a Kings Man, we have adopted ten tenets describing what a
Kings Man does. These tenets are listed below, and should be memorized:
A Kings Man is a noble man.
A Kings Man is loyal to the King.
A Kings Man fights for truth.
A Kings Man defends the weak.
A Kings Man accepts responsibility.
A Kings Man rejects passivity.
A Kings Man leads courageously.
A Kings Man is content to wait for the greater reward.
A Kings Man sacrifices for the greater good.
A Kings Man is a blessing to everyone he meets.

III.

The Path of the KingsMan

The journey of a KingsMan will take him through three defined stages, ultimately
arriving at the destination stage, The Kings Man. At each of these three stages,
he will receive counsel and training from his father and other elders of the
KingsMen, while pursuing studies and projects designed to help him become more
and more like the King. In order to advance from one stage to the next, he will
need to complete certain requirements under advisement from his father and
mentor(s) and demonstrate his competence and understanding before an Elder
Review. The stages are listed below, with a brief overview of the requirements for
advancing beyond them.

The Novice Know

In the Novice stage, the KingsMan focuses on learning what it means to be a

Kings Man. With the help of his father, elders and a KingsMan Squire mentor, he
will seek to understand Gods design for manhood and pledge himself to the
pursuit of achieving it. To demonstrate his growth and to qualify for advancement
beyond the Novice stage, a KingsMan must complete the following requirements
to the satisfaction of an Elder Review:
Actively participate in all regular KingsMen meetings and events
Participation is more than just showing up. A KingsMans involvement
in meetings and events should be a testimony to his dedication to the
King and his desire to encourage and strengthen other KingsMen. For
that reason, the Novice should be sure to do the following:
a. Make KingsMen meetings a priority on his schedule
b. Participate in all meeting activities with a positive attitude and a
teachable spirit
c. Have a passion for Christ and love being a part of KingsMen
meetings
d. Bring his Bible and KingsMan Journey Book to all meetings
e. Wear his KingsMan shirt to meetings when possible

Memorize the Code and the Ten Tenets of a Kings Man

The Code and Tenets should become a part of a KingsMans everyday
thinking process. Every decision he makes in life should be weighed
against the Code and Tenets to verify that he is honoring his
commitments to the King. Memorizing something is the best way to
continually remind yourself of its importance. Here are a few
suggestions to help you memorize the Code and Tenets:
a.
b.
c.
d.

Post them on your bedroom and/or bathroom wall

Make them into a bookmark for your Bible
Print out each tenet and illustrate it
Record yourself saying the Code and Tenets out loud and then
play back the recording
e. Write out the Code and Tenets in your own hand
f. Discuss them with your family at the dinner table
Know the Gospel message, and be able to explain it on your own
Before a KingsMan can grow into a healthy and effective man of God, he
must first understand the Gospel and experience for himself the lifechanging salvation of Christ. Then, he must be able to explain what
Christ has done for us, so he will be equipped to do the work of the King.
The following are steps that are essential in accomplishing these things:
a. Acknowledge your own sin (Romans 3:23)
b. Accept responsibility for your own faith walk. You cannot be
saved by the faith of your father.
c. Take personal responsibility to read your Bible daily, so that
you may hear the Word of God clearly
d. Understand the four biblical stages of history: Creation, Fall,
Redemption, Re-creation. Be able to explain what happens in
each stage and how Jesus sacrifice made it possible.
e. Be able to tell the gospel in your own words. To help you do
this, you may want to learn to use the G.O.S.P.E.L. acronym,
the evangecube, the Roman Road, or another Gospel telling
aid.

Identify key Bible verses for each Tenet, and record them in the
KingsMan Journey Book
The Novice should record Bible verses in his KingsMan Journey Book
that support or explain the value of each Tenet. By the time he is ready
to advance beyond the Novice stage, he should have recorded at least 3-4
verses for each tenet.
Shadow a Squire
Each KingsMan Novice will be assigned to a KingsMan Squire. The
Squire will serve as a mentor to the Novice, to encourage them and help
them with the following:
a. Understanding of KingsMen meetings and expectations for
their participation
b. Understanding of the Path of a KingsMan
c. Memorization of The Code of the Kings Man
d. Memorization of The Ten Tenets of a Kings Man
e. Learning to explain the Gospel of Christ
f. Identification of key Bible verses for each Tenet
The Novice should make an effort to build a relationship with the Squire
they are assigned to shadow, and have a healthy respect to the knowledge
the Squire is able to share.
Represent the KingsMen well by striving to model the 10 Tenets at
all times in and outside of KingsMen meetings
As a KingsMan, your attitudes and behavior outside of KingsMen meetings
and events will reflect, not only on your own character and spiritual walk, but
also on the character and integrity of the group as a whole. The Code and
Tenets of a Kings Man are guidelines for life in general, not just for
KingsMen gatherings. To behave according to different standards in different
situations is called being double-minded and is the opposite of integrity.
(James 1:8)

V.

The Page Show"

In the Page stage, the KingsMan is focused on putting the Code and Ten Tenets of
a Kings Man into practice and reaching outside the group to tell others about the
love of Christ. The Page seeks in both word and deed to be a testimony to the
grace, love, and mercy of the King, as he continues to gain a greater understanding
of Gods expectations for him as a Man of God. In order to demonstrate his
growth and to qualify for advancement beyond the Page stage, a KingsMan must
meet the following requirements to the satisfaction of an Elder Review:
Memorize key Bible verses for each of the Tenets of a Kings Man
Choose two of the verses (or passages) you have recorded for each tenet,
and memorize them, being able to identify book, chapter, and verse as
well as the tenet the verse corresponds to.
Memorizing scripture is a way of hiding Gods word in your heart (Psalm
119:11). When you do this, God is able to speak to you through the
scripture at any time, not just when you are studying your Bible. Here
are a few suggestions to help you memorize your verses:
a.
b.
c.
d.

Post them on your bedroom and/or bathroom wall

Make them into a bookmark for your Bible
Print out each verse and illustrate it
Record yourself saying the verses out loud and then play back
the recording

e. Write out the verse in your own hand

f. Discuss them with your family at the dinner table
Develop an active personal prayer life (James 5:13-16)
As you continue to grow in the faith, it is imperative that you develop a
rhythm of prayer. Gods word extols us to pray at all times, without ceasing,
desiring His will above our own. At the Page level, the KingsMan moves
from the sporadic, self-focused prayers of childhood to daily prayers that
reflect care for others and a yielding to Gods will. In pursuit of this goal,
the page may find the following goals helpful:
a. Memorize, study, and understand the Lords Prayer (Matthew
6:9-13)
b. Begin a prayer list so that you may remember to pray
specifically for others
c. Document your prayers by writing in a prayer journal.
Utilizing a prayer journal has the added benefit of being able to
look back and remember how God has answered your prayers
in the past
d. Use a prayer aid, such as the PRAY acronym
(Praise/Repent/Ask/Yield) to help shape your prayers and
develop habitual prayer patterns
e. Pray specifically for God to prepare you to be the spiritual
leader of your household in the future
f. Utilize key scriptures to pray purposely for yourself and others
Design, plan, organize and execute an Outreach project
A KingsMan who has come to a good understanding of what the King
has done for him, will naturally have a desire to see the good news spread
far and wide. However, even adults who are life-long believers can be
uncomfortable with the thought of sharing their faith with others. A
KingsMan page will seek to conquer this fear and lead courageously by
completing a project focused on passing the love of Christ on to others.
Below are some suggestions for possible project ideas:
a. Adopt a child in an impoverished country and write letters to
them sharing the Gospel.

b. Organize and lead a Bible study series or club for your younger
siblings, peers, or younger students you know.
c. Write a series of letters or emails to a friend or family member
that you know does not know Christ, or meet in person with
them on a regular basis to demonstrate Christs love for them.
d. Create a piece of art that proclaims the Gospel. This may
include writing a book or a play, making a slideshow or a
movie, writing a song or a poem, or creating a visual art piece
that clearly conveys a message about the Savior.
e. Build a website that communicates Biblical truth.
f. Participate in leadership in a VBS program
g. Prepare a speech or presentation that presents the gospel and
deliver it to a live audience.
Begin documenting experiences and acquired knowledge in the
KingsMan Journey Book
The Journey Book is an opportunity for you to keep a record of your
growth from KingsMan to the Kings Man. By recording the scripture,
lessons, experiences, and examples of others that have taught you the
most about being a man of God, you will create a memoir of your
journey that is both personal and poignant. You may be creative in your
choice of materials to file in your KingsMan Journey Book (make it your
own), but anything you include should in some way relate to the Code
and Tenets of a Kings Man or to other lessons you have learned about
what it means to be a Kings Man. Here are some examples of materials
you may want to include in your KingsMan Journey Book:
a. Personal accounts of KingsMen events and projects you have
participated in. Explain what you did, what the results were,
and what you learned from it. Record your accounts under the
Tenet that you feel they relate to the most.
b. Summaries in your own words of Bible studies or other lessons
learned during KingsMen meetings and events; or notes from
sermons or other lessons from trusted sources that were
meaningful to you. Record these under the Tenet that you feel
they relate to the most.

c. Pictures, flyers, brochures, or keepsakes relating to KingsMen

projects or retreats that you have participated in. Include a
description of the event and any lessons you learned from it.
d. Stories, newspaper clippings, or biographies of historical
figures or friends and family members whom you consider to
be good examples of a true Kings Man. Include your own
thoughts, and record the stories under the Tenet you feel the
person has demonstrated the most.
e. Comments on or summaries of impactful books you have read,
or impactful art (song lyrics, poems, etc) that highlight the
Godly principals of manhood. Record these under the Tenet
that you feel they relate to the most.
Represent the KingsMen well by striving to model the 10 Tenets at
all times in and outside of KingsMen meetings
As a KingsMan, your attitudes and behavior outside of KingsMen
meetings and events will reflect, not only on your own character and
spiritual walk, but also on the character and integrity of the group as a
whole. The Code and Tenets of a Kings Man are guidelines for life in
general, not just for KingsMen gatherings. To behave according to
different standards in different situations is called being double-minded
and is the opposite of integrity. (James 1:8)

VI.

The Squire Lead

In the Squire stage, the KingsMan focuses on reaching back to share the wisdom
and understanding he has acquired so far with those who are following closely
behind. In order to become an effective leader, the KingsMan must, of course,
continue to purposely pursue his own spiritual growth through a deeper exploration
of the tenets. However, the Squire has already learned and accomplished much in
his journey to become a Kings Man, most likely including some major challenges,
testing, or consequences of poor choices. These experiences make the Squire a
prime candidate for imparting wisdom, encouragement, and warning to younger
KingsMen who look up to him. In order to demonstrate his growth and qualify for
advancement beyond the Squire stage, a KingsMan must meet the following
requirements to the satisfaction of an Elder Review:

Actively participate in all regular KingsMen meetings and events

with dedication
Participation is more than just showing up, and a Squire has the added
responsibility of being a leader in the group. A KingsMans involvement
in meetings and events should be a testimony to his dedication to the
King and his desire to encourage and strengthen other KingsMen. For
that reason, the Squire should be sure to do the following:
a. Make KingsMen meetings a priority on his schedule
b. Participate in all meeting activities with a positive attitude and a
teachable spirit
c. Have a passion for Christ and love being a part of KingsMen
meetings
d. Bring his Bible and KingsMan Journey Book to all meetings
e. Wear his KingsMan shirt to meetings when possible
f. Take every opportunity to encourage, inspire, and build up
younger members of the KingsMen group.
g. Set the example. A solid example of kind words and positive
attitudes from the Squires will set the standard for the attitude
of the group as a whole.
Take leadership in meetings
Squires are leaders in training. As such, they will be asked on occasion
to assist with meeting planning and preparation by performing duties
such as presenting a devotion, leading a prayer, or organizing an activity.
When a squire is asked to participate in a leadership role, he should
accept the request enthusiastically and perform the duty to the best of his
abilities. Fathers and mentors will be available to train and help the
Squire in these tasks, with the end goal of equipping and empowering the
Squire to take on more responsibility and lead courageously.
In addition, a Squire should lead by example by participating in all
KingsMan activities with a positive attitude and genuine enthusiasm,
taking every opportunity to encourage younger members of the group.
Sponsor and guide a Novice KingsMan
Each Squire will be assigned to be a mentor to a Novice KingsMan. The
Squires primary responsibilities as a mentor will be to acclimate the new

Novices to the group, helping them to feel comfortable and confident as a

member of the KingsMen, and to assist the Novice in studying and
memorizing key information regarding what it means to be a KingsMan
(ie. The Code and Tenets, etc see the IV. The Novice for complete
descriptions of what a Novice should be learning). Remember, as an
older member of the KingsMan, the Squires attitude toward younger
members is crucial. An encouraging word from a Squire can go a long
way in building confidence and enthusiasm in the young Novice. A
belittling attitude or comment can be crushing to an admiring younger
brother. The Squires should strive to always speak and act in a manner
worthy of the respect and emulation of the younger KingsMan. A
Kings Man is a blessing to everyone he meets.
Write out the Law
When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a
scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to
be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may
learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this
law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his fellow
Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his
descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel. (Deut
17:18-20)
As you become the Kings Man, and demonstrate yourself ready for
leadership, the King will reward you by increasing the size of your own
kingdom (authority over family, responsibility at work, mentoring of
others, etc.). It is fitting then, that you should follow the tradition of the
Kings of Israel, and write out a copy of the law in your own hand. This
will not only help you remember the law, but also make it more personal
for you.
Work with your father and mentor to determine the most appropriate
passages for you to copy. The tradition of the Kings of Israel was to
copy the book of Deuteronomy in its entirety. The following are some
(but by no means all possible) other passages you might want to consider
copying:
a. Matthew 5-7 (The Law as Jesus gave it)
b. Matthew 22:34-40 (The greatest commandments)

c.
d.
e.
f.
g.
h.

Psalm 101 (The Kings Charter)

Colossians 3:1 4:6 (Living as Those Made Alive in Christ)
The Book of Titus
The Book of James
1 Corinthians 13 (The Love Chapter)
The Book of Proverbs

Take the time and put forth the extra effort to make your book of the Law
something of value. The amount of devotion you put into copying the
Law will demonstrate the depth of your respect for it. Here are some
suggestions for ways to make your copy of the Law special:
a. Purchase an attractive journal to write in, perhaps one with a
leather cover
b. Purchase a nice pen to write with and practice writing each
passage on a separate page before copying it into your journal
in permanent ink
c. Take the time to learn some calligraphy and make the writing of
the Law a work of art in itself
d. If you are an artistic person, include some personal artwork in
your journal that reflects your appreciation of Gods Law.
Choose a mentor and meet with him regularly
The Path of the KingsMan can be difficult, and the King does not intend
for you to travel it alone. God has placed men in your life who have
already walked the road you are on now. These men can offer valuable
insight to can help you navigate difficult paths and avoid pitfalls that you
might otherwise have to discover the hard way through poor choices.
As a Squire, you may choose a mentor to be this guiding voice for you,
either from one of the elder KingsMan in your group (not your father) or
another noble man in your church or family that models the Ten Tenets
of a Kings Man and is willing to take time to understand the Path of the
Kingsman and help you grow in your faith. Consider looking for a
mentor who matches much of the following criteria:
a.
b.
c.
d.

Someone you esteem

Someone you see on a regular basis
Someone that has similar interests
Someone that holds a job that you may consider pursuing

e. Someone that has skills or characteristics that you would also

like to learn
Complete a father and mentor approved project for each Tenet
In order to advance to the final stage and be recognized as The Kings
Man, the Squire must be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding
and practiced application of all of the Ten Tenets. These are the
characteristics that define a true Kings Man, and so they must come to
define your character as well. To demonstrate this fully, with the help of
his father and his chosen mentor, the Squire will choose and complete
one project for each Tenet. Each project should meet the following
criteria:
a. The project should clearly represent the associated Tenet
b. The project should require effort on the part of the KingsMan.
There are no shortcuts to becoming a Kings Man.
c. The project should demonstrate the Squires understanding of
the associated Tenet as well as his heart for the King
d. The project should be completed with excellence, to the best of
the Squires abilities. A Kings Man must always give his all to
the King.
The Tenet Resource sheets in VIII. Tenet Resources and Project Ideas
will help you with some ideas for these projects, but when possible, make
the project your own. Consider the spiritual goals and virtues associated
with each Tenet and look for the unique ways that God may be calling
you to live this tenet out. Your father and mentor will help you
determine if your project ideas will be suitable for fulfilling this
requirement.
Document Tenet projects in the KingsMan Journey Book
Each of the ten projects the Squire chooses should be documented fully
in his KingsMan Journey Book. From beginning to end in your project
work, be aware that you will eventually be relating this experience to an
Elder Review, so keep good records about what you have done. For each
project, include the following in your Journey Book:
a. A description of the project objectives what you are trying to
accomplish

b. An explanation of how these objectives demonstrate the

associated Tenet
c. A detailed description of how the project was carried out.
Include a dated log of each step of the project, relating when,
where, and how each step was completed.
d. Samples of any materials created in completion of the project.
For example, flyers created to advertise a business or ministry
you started.
e. Pictures of you performing the work of the project. For
example, photos of you mowing lawns and raking leaves for the
elderly.
f. Signatures from your father and mentor, signifying that you
have completed the project with excellence.
(James 1:8) As a Squire, having completed
several years of participation in a KingsMan group, your actions have a
huge bearing on the reputation of the whole group.
