COLLOIDS
Chapter 14 in Chemistry by Whitten
Colloids
an intermediate type of mixture that has a particle size between those of true solutions and suspensions
the particles do not settle out of the solution but they make the solution cloudy or opaque
Examples of colloids include:
1. Fog
2. Smoke
3. Paint
4. Milk
5. Mayonnaise
6. Shaving cream
7. Clouds
Suspension
larger particle size of the dispersed phase
the particles settle after standing
Tyndall Effect
a beam of light is scattered by the dispersed phase; used to differentiate colloids from solutions
You can observe this by preparing a starch mixture (dissolve starch in hot water) and a laser pointer.
