Rhetorical Prcis
Rob Kall, in his article titled, Book Review The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, argues that the
book, The Last Lecture, is a unique story that gives readers a new perspective on life. He
supports his claim by first explaining Pauschs situation, then sharing his first impression of the
book, then describing some of the books themes, then listing several quotes from the book that
represent Pauschs attitude towards life, then giving examples of his own experience, and finally
summarizing its overall purpose. Kalls purpose is to convince the audience that the book is
worth the read in order to help them gain a new perspective on life. He adopts an informal/casual
tone that allows readers to understand his point of view.
Believing
Rob Kall points out that Pausch has
accumulated lots of experience and has had
many crazy things thrown at him in his life. He
has a whole new attitude towards life, and lives
his life according to a few quotes. For
example, The brick walls are there for a
reason. Theyre not there to keep us out. The
brick walls are there to give us a chance to
show how badly we want something. Also, he
believes that people who fail are more likely to
succeed, because Experience is what you get
when you didnt get what you wanted. This
type of attitude shows that Pausch is
determined, and has the necessary grit to
Doubting
Although Pausch lives in a way that
demonstrates his grit, perseverance, and belief
that failure creates success, just like Gladwell
states in Outliers, he did not live this way to
achieve success. He lived his life with
determination in order to get more out of life
and to truly enjoy it without wasting a single
minute. He did not live the way he did to
achieve any particular success, although he did
become successful. Gladwells principals do
not apply in this situation because his success
came more than just his positive outlook on
life.
