Dear Families,
Janvier 2015
Welcome back after the holidays. I hope everyone had a relaxing couple of weeks with their families.
French Language: This month, the class will be concentrating on fairytales, focusing mainly on
Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Your child will be introduced to new vocabulary associated with a
variety of fairytales as well as completing various activities using the vocabulary. We will also be
focusing on the following sound for E (le, de).
Science: The class will proceed with the unit on energy discussing ways that we can conserve
energy in our daily lives such as turning off the lights when not in the room.
Social Studies: The class will be exploring more about responsibilities, rules and behaviours in the
class, outside on the yard as well as at home. Being reminded of these routines and procedures in
the New Year will reinforce those that were introduced before the holidays.
Math: The class will continue to work on Addition and Subtraction facts to 12. In addition, students
will be working on problem solving strategies using pictures, numbers and words.
English: The focus will be on using the introduced reading strategies to read stories together and
independently as well as procedural writing or writing How-To instructions. Students will be working
on writing down the instructions for how to complete an activity or different tasks. In addition, students
will have opportunities to check their written instructions or procedures orally to determine if their
written procedure is missing any important details.
Home Reading: Your child will be bringing home three books in January. One English book will be at
their level and another English book will be one level above. As well, a French book will be going
home. I hope this will encourage your child to progress in their reading. Thank you for encouraging
reading at home. I have seen improvement in all the students. Hard work pays off! Keep up the
encouragement.
