Huntsman Cancer Institute is a healthcare based hospital providing both inpatient and outpatient
services to individuals living with cancer.
Who Are We
Huntsman Cancer Institute is part of the University of Utah health care system. We are located
at 2000 Circle of Hope Drive in Salt Lake City, Utah. We serve thousands of cancer patients
throughout the Intermountain West every year. We also provide both academic and clinical
training for future physicians, health care professionals, and researchers. The Huntsman Cancer
Institute (HCI) is a National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Center, meaning it meets the
highest national standards for cancer care and research.
Our Mission
Huntsman Cancer Institutes mission is to understand cancer from its beginnings, to use that
knowledge in the creation and improvement of cancer treatments, to relieve the suffering of
cancer patients, and to provide education about cancer risk, prevention, and care.
Who do we serve
HCI is committed to providing the highest quality of services to any individual with cancer no
matter of their age, race, gender, or religion.
Goals:
To teach lifelong skill that contributes to the health and recovery all clients cancer
diagnosis.
Increase all clients sense of well being and resiliency to help relieve their suffering of
cancer.
Provide psycho-educational resources and leisure experiences clients can increase their
sense of well being and resiliency.
Help all clients identify his/her support system and learn tools to help keep healthy
relationships.
Provide community resources during discharge to ensure healthy leisure participation
after WSC programs have ended.
Scope of Care:
Cancer survivors ages six and older as outlined in the admissions criteria.
Clients referred to WSC who meet the Defining Characteristics outlined by WSP
diagnostic protocols and the admissions criteria.
Families of those suffering from cancer
Recreational Therapy programs:
o Outpatient Adult (18+ years old)
o Outpatient Youth (6-17 years old)
o Community Resources
The RT departments risk management plan aligns with HCI plan. All RTs monitor supplies
before and after group, includes counting, sanitizing, and monitoring equipment safety. RTs are
cautious and aware of certain movements or activities that could cause patients on chemotherapy
to be nauseous and/or dizzy. If the RT takes clients on a community outing all participants must
sign a waiver and adhere to transportation policies.

The Director of RT is responsible for creating and monitoring the annual budget.
The combined RT staff is responsible for monitoring equipment used in POWER class,
art supplies, and any other equipment used during Recreation Therapy.
RTs can formally request new equipment on the WSC wish list.
If an RT is planning upon using a shared WSC equipment he or she must request at least
four hours in advance for it to be put aside for their use.
