A Perfect Society

By
Santillan Jr., Ernesto D.

Dear Reader,

We all know that corruption has always played a part of our society. During my research, I found that
our Founding Fathers saw the rise of corruptions and how people can be influenced by money. There
are politicians being influenced by corruptions, criminal organizations or other wealthy people which
effects the citizens of the country. We have seen and heard of these actions from the beginning of time.
People expose the corruptions using Marxist lens from TV shows, political cartoons and even graffiti
on the walls. Some people even express their messages through hidden topics in shows or comic books.
For instance there is a TV show called Gotham, whose main story line is about corruption in a major
metropolitan city and main characters originated from a popular comic book from my youth called
Batman. I do agree with both the creators of Batman and Gotham that there has to be a change in our
society from all the corruption.
Sincerely

Santillan Jr., Ernesto D

Gotham City Hustle

Hanging in form before the storm, A hero has been born.
Shadowed retrieve, scaling the walls as they flutter, cry and revolve.
Upon leaving the cave, they flap and wave until they cover the sky.
Once slipped into the mist, A bright signal sings a victims cry!
"We need you, Our Dark Knight!"
Spinning and burning, sceaming and turning. The batmobile is on it's way.
Thundering through Gotham's dark streets, Batmans here to save the day!
Giggles and squeals. Joker's got wheels and Harley's playing Bat.
Riddles got the question and Boogie's brought some psychopathes.
A bus full of Villians, So careless and worry free. Trifle through the crooked city.
Suddenly a blast of exasperated air. Seems a sharpened blade has left each tire in disrepair.
Spun out, Flipped up, with a crashing boom. Gotham City's bad guys' will be back in Arkham soon.
Rumbling through the wreckage, with all the Villians worn.
One's slipped through the crack.
Jokers gone again, But the Bat will always bring him back.

On September of
2014, the Fox
Network aired its pilot
episode for the
television show
Gotham. The series is
primarily about
Commissioner Gordon
as a young, newly
promoted detective
but also shows how
society influenced a
young man, Bruce
Wayne, to become
the citys hero known
as Batman.

Gotham not only shows how it molded a hero but how the city
created some of its villains through corruption and its negative
influence. The show has numerous amounts of producers and writers
from NCIS, Rome and Saving Private Ryan that have helped this show
become a huge success from the time it was released due to their
credibility from their previous works.

In the beginning of the show, newly promoted detective James Gordon,

finds himself in Gotham and learns that the police department and its city
officials are corrupted or tied to an organize crime ring that is influencing
its citizens to evolve into either heroes or villains. Detective Gordon and his
partner, Detective Bullock, are assigned to track down the murder of
Thomas and Martha Wayne who were murdered in front of their son,
Bruce Wayne, in an alley at night after leaving the movie theater.

From a Marxist point of view, the Directors show how organized crime
rings can influence city politicians and police department officials and
displays the citizens reactions to their corruption. Detective Gordon
later finds out that the Gotham City Police
Department worked with a local
street gang to frame an innocent
man for the death of Bruce
Waynes parents. They worked
together to plant evidence into
the home of the alleged
suspects home.

When Detective Gordon finds this

information, he confronts the local
gang leader who later attempts to
have him executed. The gang
captures the detective and brings
him to a meat slaughter house
where they hang him upside down
to be killed. Carmine Falcone, the
leader of the mafia, enters the room
and interrupts the execution.
Falcone then explained to Detective
Gordon that officers cannot be
executed without his permission.

The show has characters from the original comic and explains how
they grew into the characters that they are now. The shows setting is
in a major metropolitan city in America that is facing a high crime
wave. The show is targeted to the general population; from men and
women ranging from youth to adults. Some of the characters that
appear in the first episode are just young adults and children.

These characters are

who we know as Poison
Ivy, Batman, Catwoman
and Cobblepot (The
Penguin) later in life.
They are using the
show to exploit the
corruption in todays
politics. Gotham also
shows that corruption
not only effects the low
or middle class citizens
of a city but that it also
effects the wealthy
class, as well.

The producers make their plot effective by utilizing familiar and likable
fictional characters to attract an audience of all ages. Overall, Gotham
appears to be a very intriguing show that tells us about todays society
with fictional characters from
the DC comic book Batman
of my youth. These
Characters started as normal
children or young adults that
were affected by the
environment that they live
in. It shows how it lead them to become the heroes or villains we
know them as today.

The corruption either lead them to become strong individuals who

tried to help the city or enhanced their anger which lead them to
harm the city. In reality, our elected leaders sometimes get tainted to
do wrong or make poor decisions. This leads some people to do
better to make a change positively or some to behave negatively
because they are rebelling against it.
