Lesson Intro & Lesson Development:
Each side will get multiple times to speak. Remember your job is to convince the other
side whether we should or should not go to war with Great Britain. Everybody is
required to speak at least once. Even if someone else says your reason, you should be
able to elaborate on it as well. I will be keeping track of who speaks. I will also be
keeping track of how respectful you are while you are listening and taking notes of
your opponents and your use of information and/or statistics to convince your
opponent.
Write on board:
Number of Speaking Times: At least one
Respect for Other Team: All statements, body language, and responses were
respectful and were in appropriate language
Understanding of Topic: The team clearly understood the topic in-depth and
presented their information with several relevant facts, statistics, and/or examples
Each side will present one main argument at a time. Multiple students can elaborate
on each reason. As your opponent is presenting their reason, you are to write their
main reasons with their supporting evidence down on the appropriate side. This will
be critical when we work together to come to a solution later on.
Give each side 5-10 minutes to share one reason that they should or should not
engage in war with Great Britain.
Concluding the Lesson:
Give me a reason for the opposing side. List reasons on board in a similar format as
worksheet. Remind the students that will be filling out the opposite side of their
debate worksheet as the other side is speaking.
