SIOP Lesson Plan Template 2

STANDARDS:
E03.B-K.1.1.3: Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or
concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time,
sequence, and cause/effect.
E03.B-K.1.1.2: Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they
support the main idea.
1.5.3.A: Write with a focus, with an understanding of topic, task, and audience.

THEME: Social Studies/Language Arts


LESSON TOPIC: The Wall
OBJECTIVES:
Language:
Students will use their newly learned information to draw a related picture of
and recall important information and ideas from the text.

Content:
Students will learn about the importance and the significance of the Vietnam Memorial.

LEARNING STRATEGIES:
Social/affective strategy
Share personal experiences and knowledge about the memorial, using key vocabulary in
sentences

KEY VOCABULARY: Veteran, memorial, hero, honor, respect, conflict


MATERIALS: "The Wall" by Eve Bunting, paper, pencils
MOTIVATION:
(Building background)
Because we live in the United States, it is very important that students have an understanding of
the importance of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC. Students will be motivated by
speaking about their experiences with memorials in various places, for various historical events.
The teacher will give students background on the book, "The Wall", by Eve Bunting, as well as
some background about the time period and the Vietnam War.

PRESENTATION:
(Language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, feedback)
Ask student about background knowledge on war. (if he knows what war means). Explain to him
that it is the concept of two countries that do not get along and that they have a problem.
(Intoduce the word conflict). Relate conflict to hockey-when players fight during the game.
Explain that the US was once in a conflict with Vietnam. Then explain that the verterans are the
people that fought in the war.

PRACTICE AND APPLICATION:

Student will discuss what they know about the memorial before, during, and after the lesson.

REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT:


(Review objectives and vocabulary, assess learning)
Teacher will ask student to recall new vocabulary, important facts, dates, and information that
they learned from the lesson, as well from the reading material.

EXTENSION:
An extension of this lesson can be achieved through the viewing of a virtual seeing of the wall via
googlemaps.
Language and curriculum extension can be achieved through further reading of children's
literature and videos.
