I was inspired by this topic because many people I know were thinking about resorting
to abortion when they knew they couldnt afford a child. While this was going on, all my other
friends and family were saying that abortion is the same as murder and is wrong. They would
also state that this is not the way that God wants us to live. This particular thing got me
wondering about the debate and the arguments of this thing called abortion.
Donovan, Chuck Openness Would Reveal the Shocking Number of Abortions, New York
Times, 2014, http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2013/06/30/coming-out-onabortion/openness-would-reveal-the-shocking-number-of-abortions
Summary. Chuck Summarizes how high and common getting an abortion may be for an
average American woman. He states that, The fact that abortion is common, not rare, and that
many women resort to it many times might find little favor among the public. He also shows
that given the frequency of abortion in the United States and estimates that more than a
quarter of all U.S. women will have had at least one abortion.
Evaluation. I found this article correct and valuable in more ways than one. Chuck Donovan, the
president of the Charlotte Lozier Institute, has very precise information about this topic. I didnt
find any weaknesses within this research.
Reflection. This research was very useful, and Im positive that I will be able to use it in more
ways than one. I could have gotten more information, but this only leads me to wanting to
know more about my topic. So, I will definitely do so.
Baker, Aspen Openness Shouldnt be Used to Create Abortion Debate, New York Times, 2013,
http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2013/06/30/coming-out-on-abortion/opennessshouldnt-be-used-to-create-abortion-debate
Summary. In this article Aspen describes and shows her experience with getting an abortion.
She states that there are safe ways to do it and there are unsafe ways. The main thing that I
found in this article was how if a women shares her story about abortion to her family or
friends, she may be putting her relationships in jeopardy.
Evaluation. To me, this article does not have enough facts, yet alone, enough debating. Aspen
Baker, the founder and executive director of Exhale an organization that provides a
supportive, respectful culture for people to discuss their abortion experience is all about
experience and her point of view.
Reflection. Although this research doesnt have enough facts, it is still very useful information. I
think I can apply this to some of my own work in my essay.
Johnson, Kierra Respect Those Who Want to Keep Their Abortion Private, New York Times,
2013, http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2013/06/30/coming-out-on-abortion/respectthose-who-want-to-keep-their-abortion-private
Summary. In this article that I found, Johnson, Kierra tells about how when people talk about
their abortions, they very much inspire others to come forward with their own stories. She also
says it in her own words, Giving storytelling priority over other types of advocacy is
counterproductive and can put yet another burden on women.
Evaluation. This article has a lot more fact than the last one that I overviewed, but it still leads
me to wanting to know more about this topic that I chose. I find Kierra reasonable because of
her place as an executive director of Choice USA. I feel that I can learn from her points and
facts.
Reflection. Using this article and research in my final essay I feel can do me very well. Still
searching for more information on the topic, I plan to use Kierras work and take it to heart.
Cockrill, Kate Sharing Abortion Experiences Definitely Affects Others Attitudes, New York
Times, 2013, http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2013/06/30/coming-out-onabortion/sharing-abortion-experiences-definitely-affects-others-attitudes
Summary. This research was written by Kate Cockrill, a public health researcher at the
University of California, San Francisco, and I find it very interesting. She tells about how when
women in book clubs talked of their abortion, members who had initially opposed abortion
access often changed their attitude over time.
Evaluation. Like most of the others, this research was very informative and useful. With Kates
experience and history as a health researcher, I find that she is very reasonable, and I can look
to her for more information. I admire all of the evidence that she has, but Im will continue to
search for more.
Reflection. Cockrill listed the number of book readings that regarded true stories of pregnancy
written by women, and I feel that I can state this information into my rough draft of my essay.
Again, reading this article motivated me into researching and seeing if these books could be
seen to have an effect.
Forney, Georgette Sharing Stories Would Make Women Avoid Abortion, New York Times,
2013, http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2013/06/30/coming-out-on-abortion/sharingstories-would-make-women-avoid-abortion
Summary. Making a person avoid abortion can be easy in many different ways, as is convincing
them to get abortion. Forney is the president of Anglicans for Life and co-founder of the silent
no more awareness Campaign. We should ensure our voices are heard by a complacent
society that has signed on to choice without really knowing what is being chosen, is one of the
things that she has stated.
Evaluation. Although Georgette Forney has a lot of educational and career history in this topic,
she is also experienced because she, herself has also gotten an abortion. She did so when she
was at the age of 16.
Reflection. Finding someone with this much history and experience in more ways than one,
isnt easy. Im definitely glad that I had come across this article written by Georgette Forney
because I truly feel like I can use some of this information.
Allott, Daniel With Abortion Familiarity Breeds Contempt, New York Times, 2013,
http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2013/06/30/coming-out-on-abortion/with-abortionfamiliarity-breeds-contempt
Summary. Daniel Allott explores the term of acceptance. I like the way that he states, Getting
to know gay people made more Americans accept them. Getting to know abortion has very
often had that same effect. This article inspires and shows that there is a way to turn around a
persons thoughts.
Evaluation. As a senior writer at American Values a public policy organization Daniel Allott
has a lot of great reasoning with the public. His tone was almost just his pint of view, and I
definitely think that he could have done better. This article does have weaknesses as well as
strong points.
Reflection. This information may be irrelevant for my essay but I still feel that I can say some of
these things to change a point of view. I dont think I need to ask a question and convince of my
answer but to explore the subject. This article almost brings me off of my main topic for this
essay.
Renee, Sonya Women Need to Let Others Know the Real Truth About Abortion, New York
Times, 2014, http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2013/06/30/coming-out-onabortion/women-need-to-let-others-know-the-real-truth-about-abortion
Summary. This article responds to the thought of letting others know the real truth about
abortion while others are saying to keep it quiet. Sonya Renee had an abortion when she was
20 years old and she told only God, her best friend the boy who got her pregnant. When
women speak, we erase the political narrative and remind people that we are mothers,
students, lawyers and teens. The main thing that she said that got me thinking was, In this
society, womens sexuality is a loaded gun always pointed at us.
Evaluation. Sonya Renee, a performance poet and founder and chief executive of the
organization The Body is Not an Apology, was one of the main ones who got me to think deep
down into this topic and subject of abortion. Is it right or wrong? I now wonder. I started my
research thinking that it was murder, but now Im seeing this in another point of view.
Reflection. Because this is the article that got me most thinking, I plan to use this information in
my essay. I hope to use some of her words and phrases to change the mind of another person
debating about the topic.
a law that could affect a womans ability to get the morning-after pill or birth control pills that
destroy eggs.
Evaluation. These results in this research were very useful and informative. Knowing more and
more about abortion is making it much easier for me to do more research and writing on the
topic. This article is making me wonder about the medical side more than the religious and
debating side. This sight seems reasonable because of Falcos experience.
Reflection. I know this information isnt much of a debate, but its more of facts and
information. I still plan on using some of these things to show proof and statements about this
topic.
