R
Adam McKinlay

Creation of the Politburo

It was created by the Bolshevik Party on late October in 1917.
Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, and Josef Stalin was three of the seven
members of the Politburo.
Politburo party seen as the vanguard of the people and the
members of the party informally lead the state and the highest body
of the central government at that time.

Russian Civil War

The Russian Civil War wasnt good for Russia they had a lot of
problems and with the Russian Civil War going on they created more
problems and a lot more deaths.
The Russian Civil War was a fight between the Red army- Bolsheviks
and White army- anti- Bolshevik forces. This war broke out because
many people were upset with the Bolsheviks and also Lenin closed
the assembly.

Stalins Five year plans

- The Five year plan was to centralize the economy and was a series of
things that really was to help the economy nation-wide.
- In some ways it did really help Russia and the economy but it also did
hurt the citizens because some of the changes and conditions made
them without food and many other things like shelter and electricity which
really didnt workout well in some cases.

World War 2
People thought that Russia entering the terrifying and horrifying war
which was called War World 2 was not a very good idea for Russia
and that it would hurt them.
In the Eastern front Germany attacked Russia but it was Russia that
came out on top

Joe 1
- This was a nickname that the US used in reference of Joseph Stalin as a
code name for a nuclear weapon called RDS- 1 and this was a very
dangerous weapon and was the first nuclear weapon that Soviet Union
created.
- This was good for the Soviet Union and meant to help them because
they could use this in wars and other countries would see them as a
threat with such a powerful weapon.

Hydrogen Bomb
This was developed and was able to help the Soviet Union and always
use this to their advantage because at the time it was the biggest
nuclear weapon in the world and they were one of five nations to be
able produce one of these weapons in time.
This was a nuclear weapon that could be very dangerous and was
used throughout the Cold War with an atomic center.

Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was a collective defense treaty that was used
between eight Communist states.
This was meant to help Russia and was also seen as the Treaty
organization of Friendship.

Sputnik
Sputnik was the first artificial Earth Satellite to enter into space and
Sputnik was made by the Soviet Union. It was 23 inches in diameter
and was a polished metal sphere with four external radio antennas to
broadcast into Earth.
This helped Russia and it helped them because it triggered the Space
Race which it was between the US and the USSR and it was because
they were the two best Space stations in the world.

Laika and Sputnik 3

This was first called Sputnik 2 then as the mission continued it was
eventually called Sputnik 3. This was an amazing accomplishment for
the USSR because they were able to create the mission of one of the
first animals to go into space and the first animal to orbit the Earth
This obviously was able to help Russia moving forward not only as a
country but also in the Space Race.

Creation of the Berlin Wall

- This was a wall that was made in 1961 through the year of 1989.
Constructed by the German Democratic Republic.
- This is not very good for Russia because this is suppose to prevent
Russia from getting in and other countries from West Berlin, East
Germany, and East Berlin until it was opened again in 1989.

1968 Invasion of Czechoslovakia

In 1968 the Soviet Union sent in the Warsaw Pact troops into
Czechoslovakia to stop the reformist and they did just that but they also
had other unintended actions as well.
- This ended up being very bad for the soviet Union because they had
many short-term and long-term consequences with the US and also
other countries. Because they invaded Czechoslovakia this made any
progress with the US to be put on hold.
-

SALT 1
- SALT stood for Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. They were bilateral talks
that involved the two powerhouses of the Cold War which was the US
and the USSR on the issue armament control.
- This was able to help both countries help their understandings and help
talk about many important things.

SALT 2
- This was the second act of SALT 1 and it talked about what the US and
Soviet Union should do with nuclear weapons.
- This helped both countries because this made the Soviet Union not fire
any of their nuclear weapons at the US which was obviously good for the
US. Also if the Soviet Union did fire any kind of nuclear weapon at the
US it could have cost them in the long run and maybe there could have
been a war.

Soviet-Afghan War
- This war lasted about nine years between the Soviet Union and
Afghanistan. There were many allies and there were billions of dollars
given to the war from the US, United Kingdom and many others. There
were national insurgent groups called Mujahideen who are Muslims and
they had two allies which were Peshawar seven and the Tehran eight.
The Peshawar seven got military training from Pakistan and China.
- The war hurt the Soviet because it was known as the Mujahideen won
the war with the help of the US and it cost the Soviet Union lots of
money.

Gorbachev becomes leader

- When Gorbachev became leader this was not very good because
Gorbachev was a very bad leader. Even though he was in a tough spot
in time he still didnt do a great job of getting them out of the situations
they were in. This was not a very good time in the USSR.

Chernobyl Disaster
- This was a catastrophic nuclear accident of the date of April 26th 1986.
An explosion released so much radioactive gas and particles in the
western USSR and also in Europe.
- This was not good for the USSR at this time because it cost so much
money over time and was considered to be the worst nuclear accident in
history in conditions of cost and also they predicted that there was 4,000
deaths of cancer later on because of the accident.

Perestroika
- The literal term of Perestroika is reconstructing referring to the
economy of the Soviet Union and it changed the ways of the Soviet
Union such as more more independent actions.
- This was a good thing for the USSR because they definitely needed
some rebuilding and this was able to give them a boost to do it.

Glasnost
- Glasnost was a policy where it was meant to make openness for the
government and make them become more transparency in government
institutions and activities going on in the Soviet Union.
- This was also like a boost and to make better for the government and
also the citizens of the USSR and being in the process of rebuilding.

Voting Reforms of Gorbachev

- Gorbachev ask for reforms that will benefit the Soviet Union and their
droughts economically.
- These did help the USSR and their rebuilding process moving forward.

Free Elections in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary

- In all three of these countries communism was in these nations and they
were a big part of these nations and they were now free and there were
several different things that happened leading up to this like illegal
protest and others.

Lithuania and Latvia Protests

- Two million people joined their hands together across the Baltic States to
form a human chain for formal independence of the Baltic.
- This wasnt necessarily a great thing for the Soviet Union because they
are basically going against and protesting against the Soviet Union.

Fall of the Berlin Wall

- This was a very good thing because people all over Berlin was now able
to have the same freedom that only West Germany had before now East
Germany can enjoy that freedom as well.
- The wall that separated East and West Germany was now broken so
they were able to have freedom throughout all Germany.

Boris Yeltsin becomes President

- Boris Yeltsin was a very good President and was reelected in 1996 after
being elected in 1991 he was a good fit for the Soviet Union.
- He changed the economy from a socialist command economy to a
market economy and was able to give a good amount of money to a
group called the Oligarchs.

Gorbachev steps down

- The reason why Gorbachev stepped down was because he thought that
the citizens were ceasing to be citizens which could be of been a big
problem.
- This wasnt the best thing for the Soviet Union even though not everyone
loved the guy it still isnt good when your president has to resign and
someone else has to take his place immediately.

Final Slide
- I believe that one of the reasons that the Soviet Union Collapsed is
because there was a lot of bad planning and bad strategies that just
werent working well . It didnt help that the death of Stalin came at a bad
time in the Soviet Union history. I also believe that WW2 was a big deal
and cost a lot of money and time and also it cost them a lot of people
that they didnt need to lose. Another big event that brought them down
was the Chernobyl Disaster and also the Soviet- Afghan war. I think it
could've survived if all of these events didnt happen and was avoided in
any possible way.
