Surge Arrester

Is an electrical device
utilized in power systems
to protect electrical
equipment against
damaging effects of high
voltages during switching
and abnormal conditions.
Arresters are tested to
withstand 40 KA short-
circuit current.
Surge Counter
Surge Counter checks if particular
transmission line suffers from a
significant high numbers of overvoltage
leading to operation of the surge
arrester.
Classifications
1. Station Class Arresters
2. Intermediate Class Arresters
3. Distribution Class
Arresters (heavy, normal, and
light duty)
Classifications
Station Class Arresters
are designed for protection of equipment that may
be exposed to significant energy due to line
switching surges and at locations where
significant fault current is available.
Classifications
Intermediate Class Arresters
are designed to provide economic and
reliable protection of medium voltage class
power equipment. Used for the protection
of dry-type transformers, for use in
switching and sectionalizing equipment.
Classifications
Distribution Class Arresters
(heavy, normal, and light
duty)
are frequently used for smaller liquid-filled and dry-type
transformers 1000 kVA and less. The distribution arrester is
often used out on exposed lines that are directly connected to
rotating machines.
Surge Arrester Applications:
1. Areas with high lightning intensity
2. Important installations
3. Where grounding or shielding
conditions are incomplete
4. Protections of cable circuits
5. Protection of capacitor banks
