CLAWHAMMER MEDLEY

Traditional, Arranged by Steve Martin

I play the entire melodies of these songs almost exclusively on the flrst string, allowing tt
"
Uun3o to resonate
with nice, airy overtones. I like to make full chords down the neck, even though all the strings are not
struck, as the chord is lightly sounded as a hammer-on.
In the closing section of "Simple Gifts," a brush is indicated, which I leamed from the old Pete Seeger book,
"How to Play the Five String Banjo." The way I do it, the hand unrolls, little finger first, stopping with the
middle finger. The thumb stays connected to the first finger to hold my place over the banjo.
