Proverbs 9:10, A Context and An Application
The verse talks about wisdom, and the fear of the LORD, which in this case means
loving Him with our innermost heart and with perfect love. The fear stated in the verse means
awe and love to the LORD. Taken from Chuck Smiths sermon notes, the fear of the LORD
is like this: think of you standing before God, to respect Him with awesomeness and to
recognize His authority. But it is different from standing before a president; to respect and
fear God requires loving Him without us being forced by others. These things are to be
obtained by knowing God more and more everyday, for it is impossible to awe Him without
knowing Him. To fear the LORD, to love Him, with our greatest love, requires giving God a
proper place in our lives. It requires giving Him a very special role, to live to please God
rather than to please us, and to love God more than anything/one in the world. The
knowledge of the holy is to know deeply about Gods Words, the declared, pure, holy,
uncontaminated and unbiased truth (the Bible), therefore by knowing it we gain
understanding and knowledge. The verse is comparable to Proverbs 1:7, where it says the
fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.
The historical context is the same; Solomon writes the Proverbs. The verse, as I said
before, is actually related and is somewhat similar to Proverbs 1:7. However, while Proverbs
1:7 and Proverbs 9:10 have the word beginning, in actual Hebrew it is two different words
with two different meanings (although later they are translated as beginning). The word
beginning in Proverbs 1:7 actually originates from a Hebrew word that means the sum
total of knowledge. (Smith, Chuck Smith :: C2000 Series on Proverbs 6-10) To fear, love,
have faith, and respect God, is the total sum of knowledge. In Proverbs 9:10, the word
beginning originates from a Hebrew word that means primary or commencement, the
starting place. (Smith, Chuck Smith :: C2000 Series on Proverbs 6-10) The fear of the
LORD is the beginning of wisdom, means that to fear and love God is the starting place of
wisdom. To fear, love, and respect God, is the total sum of knowledge and starting place of
wisdom. Wisdom and knowledge are different things: knowledge is the facts stored in the
head; while wisdom is how does one act to the knowledge that he/she has in a correct way.
One may have much knowledge, but little wisdom.
This verse can be effectively applied to the daily life. To fear, respect, love, and
knowing God at the same time requires personal devotion and prayer everyday. We also have
to understand what God requires us to be, what salvation He provides, what promise He
promises, and other things through reading the Bible. There are many teachings in the Bible
that can completely change your lives; every chapter contains plentiful lessons that you can
apply to daily life. This verse, in order to be fully applied to the daily life, requires us
commitment to be closer to God everyday by praying, reading the Bible, and practicing His
commands and Words everyday; to fear and love God, to have the sum of knowledge and the
starting place of wisdom. That is what we call the fear of the LORD, to respect and love Him,
to give a special place for Him in our lives, and to trust in faith in our only God.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom:
