Lab 8: Collisions

Introduction
Purpose
To verify the conservation of momentum and energy laws
Equipment
Tracks with stops, 3 cars, weight, camera connected to computer, balance

Procedure
We set up the track with stops on it and leveled it by using the cars on them to see when they would
balance out. Set up the camera parallel to the track so we would be able to record a viewing screen
slightly larger than half a meter. We then recorded first a completely elastic collision. Since this would
be impossible to actually achieve we got it close with using magnetic repulsion for the collision. In the
first trial we collided one car into another stationary car of almost the same weight. We then used the
recording to match frame by frame where the cars were. After graphing the points using the Logger Pro
computer program we were able to find the velocities before and after the collision of both cars on the
track. Then we proceeded in doing this again but having added more mass onto the moving car. Next we
did both of these trials again but instead we had completely inelastic collisions. As an added trial we
collided a moving car into a stationary car that had weight added to it in a completely elastic collision.
