Strength: Almost always A36 (Fy=36ksi)
Standard AISC Call Out: C6X8.2

C: Channel Shape

6: Nominal Height of Beam

8.2: Weight per Linear Foot

Strength: HSS (Fy=42ksi), STD Pipe (Fy=35ksi), also
XS (Fy= 35ksi) and XXS (Fy=35ksi) but less common
Standard AISC Call Out: HSS4.0X0.237

HSS: Hollow Structural Shape

4.000: Outside Diameter

0.237: Thickness of Shape

Standard AISC Call Out: 4 Std Pipe or Pipe 4 Std

4: Nominal Inside Diameter

Std: Standard Weight, also make XS (Extra
Strong) and XXS (Extra-Extra Strong) but these
are not commonly used
Strength: Almost always A36 (Fy=36ksi)

L: Angle Shape

4: Length of Longer Leg

LLV: Long Leg Vertical,

Strength: Usually will match Wide Flange Beams,

WT: Wide Flange Tee Shape

7: Nominal Depth of Shape

TS: Old Designation for Tube Steel, no longer
used by AISC, but still used by many engineers
and contractors

Standard SJI Call Out: 48G8N8.8K

49: Depth of Girder (Actual)

G: G-Series Girder (also VG and BG)

8N: Webs Create 8 Equal Spaces

8.8K: 8.8 kip load at each panel point

Call outs may vary based on manufacturer


Standard Joist Seat Heights:

K, KCS Series: 2-1/2 inches
LH, DLH Series: 5 inches
SLH Series: No Standard
Joist Girders: 7 for most, increases to 10 for
heavy loads
