In Debt-Free U, Zac Bissonnette, a student at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst,

discusses ideas that probably make college administrators cringe. If the prospect of paying
$52,805 dollars each year for four years of college (the published rate for Notre Dame for 2011-
2012; IU Bloomington is around $23,000 per year) strikes fear in your heart this is the book for
you. Many people believe that the high cost of college is another financial bubble waiting to
burst. The average student loan debt burden for college graduates is skyrocketing! Today it is
well over $20,000!!! This does not count the amount that parents take out for their children above
what the children borrow.

The bottom line in this book is that students can get great educations at just about any college,
including community colleges. The author argues that too many students and parents decide to
spend far more for college than they can afford to spend. The result is often crippling debt for
students and their parents after graduation. Bissonnette lays out a pretty convincing argument
for a more reasoned and reasonable approach to selecting a college.
