The Wind Symphony is the premier wind and percussion ensemble in the Sunderman Conservatory of Music. Conducted by Director of Bands Dr. Russell McCutcheon and comprised of a select group of 40-50 musicians, the ensemble rehearses and performs some of the best new literature and wind band masterworks in four major concerts each year. The Wind Symphony is designed for the development of the professional performer, the professional educator and the dedicated musician. In recent years the Wind Symphony has toured Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., and in 2013 they releases a recording of music honoring the American Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg for the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of this major event. In January of 2014 the band toured China and Singapore.
The Sunderman Chamber Winds is a small, flexible ensemble consisting primarily of wind players. This ensemble gives instrumental musicians an important chamber music experience that places responsibility on each individual. Performers are exposed to standards of the wind chamber repertoire, including works by great composers including Mozart and Dvorak as well as contemporary music by composers such as Hindemith, Stravinsky and Milhaud. Membership in this ensemble is drawn from the Wind Symphony.
