Interview Report: Superintendent of Schools: Rob Neu Interviewer: Pastor Jeff MacLurg 1.

What are the positives the school district is known for? Recently the public has supported the school district by passing the levies which has provided money for ongoing programs. Outside Federal Way, people want to come here because the schools have a very positive reputation. Negative aspects to change? -There is a pervasive negative atmosphere both within the community and within the schools. This is a most difficult reality that needs addressing as it robs huge amounts of time and energy from the administration that has to combat it. -Federal Way faces the same challenges as all the other area school districts: not enough money; many different cultures and languages represented and many immigrant families. -In the 70s many school levies were not passed, and now the district is having to catch up with regard to facilities, salaries, programs, etc.

2. What are your top priorities as superintendent? Federal Way Schools will soon announce a major initiative designed to engage the community in a constructive way to develop a long-range direction and strategy that will guide the district into the future. To recapture the many hurting kids whom the school district is losing who are not continuing on to graduation. He asks that we pray that the schools truly do reach every child and engage them into the learning process so that every one of them is able to say, I love school! 3. What major constraints limit what you are able to do from your perspective? -Not enough money to do the job. -A population of Federal Way that is very diverse compared to years ago which means the strategies for education need to be different than that which the parents themselves grew up in. In order to reach this diverse population means implementing a different paradigm for education than parents are familiar with and therefore, brings a negative reaction from those who want education done the way it was done in a different generation. 4. If God were to answer any prayer of yours for this school district, what would you want Him to do? Bring a value in our city and culture for equity among all. That instead of families just caring that their child be a top student, instead they would care that all children would genuinely succeed. And that the people of Federal Way wrap ourselves around our schools for the sake of all the students.
