Riverside Police Respond to Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle


Bicyclist struck in center of town while crossing in marked crosswalk

On Friday, April 18, 2014 at 10:17 a.m., the Riverside Police Department received numerous 911 phone calls of a bicyclist struck by a vehicle at Forest and Longcommon. When the first officer arrived, he found the subject sitting on the ground beside his bicycle and the vehicle that had struck him was a 2013 Chevrolet Express Cargo Van. It was learned through the investigation that the bicyclist was in the crosswalk. The van was turning left from Forest onto northbound Longcommon when he struck the bicyclist in the roadway. The bicyclist was administered first aid by Riverside paramedics; however, he refused to be transported to the hospital. At the scene he appeared to have bruising and minor scraping. The victims bicycle was damaged and police assisted him with transportation to his residence in Lyons. Riverside Police cited the driver of the van, Krzysztof Szczepaniak, 36 of the 8900 block of South 83rd Court in Hickory Hills for striking a pedestrian in the roadway. Drugs or alcohol were not a factor in this accident. The victim, male, 42 of Lyons refused transportation to the hospital at the scene.
