Pressley 6 February 2014 CU- Life Reflection

J. Mitchell Math and Science Elementary School

One my first day I noticed that the school was different from the school back at home. This school was very large it even had three different levels to house students from Child Development through 6th grade. I was placed in Mrs. L. Holbrooks 5th grade class. In this class there is about 18 students all being African American. There were two special needs students included in the classroom as well. During the students special area time, the two special needs student came back to the class. Mrs. Holbrook explains to me that her classroom is very focused around the students. Each student have their very own iPad which allows them to work on the content being taught using differentiated assignments to which the students can achieve

satisfaction and apply the materials being taught. I worked with a small group of girls helping them with rounding numbers. The students were open about me helping them. In the beginning the small group did not say much but as time went on they were talking and asking questions. Another thing that I notice is that the school is predominantly filled with African American students. Majority of the teachers that I saw were Caucasian with little to no African American teachers there. The principal is Caucasian and the assistant principal is African American along with the cafeteria staff. I also notice how the other teachers interact with each

other, they are will to help get information, suggests ideas about the curriculum, and student behaviors. I am excited to get hands on experience in the classroom. I want to learn as much as possible while I am there. I may be working there one day I need to know how the school operates as a whole. Every week I attend I hope to learn some information I did not have prior to coming.
