Alex Xourias 11/28/2013 ENGL454 Review of The Hopey Changey Thing This past week, I saw This Hopey

Changey Thing at Studio Theatre, directed by Serge Seiden and written by Richard Nelson. The play is in repertory with its sequel, Sweet and Sad in a sequence titled The Apple Family Plays. The plot revolves around the Apple familys reunion at a dinner. The patriarch of the family, Uncle Benjamin, battles with amnesia manifested from a heart attack he suffered years earlier. Barbara, Richard, Jane, and Marian are his nieces and nephews, who are the primary sources of conflict. Overall, the play touches on themes such as the tense nature of politics and communicating earnestly through debilitating norms for politeness, yet they remain underdeveloped and unequal in their weight. Jane introduces the discourse on politeness through the mentioning of her new nonfiction book on the development of manners and the social contexts and implications of them.
