Background
Established in 1946. It is mainly derived from Sanskrit word Amulya Amul is an Indian dairy co-operative, based at Anand in the state of Gujarat. It is formed in order to remove the exploitation of marginal milk producers by traders or agents of the only existing dairy, the Polson dairy, in the small city distances to deliver milk. It is managed by Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) & is jointly owned by 3 mn milk producers in Gujarat.

It collects 9.4 million liters of milk per day from their producer members (70% of them are small & marginal farmers, landless labourers, etc) Amul invented the milk powder, processed from buffalo milk rather than cow milk. Amul products include milk powders, milk, butter, ghee, cheese, chocolates, ice-creams, etc Amul became the world's largest vegetarian cheese and the largest pouched-milk brand.

Success of Amul
GCMMF formed the NGO, Amul Relief Trust, through which Amul built schools devastated in Gujarat earthquake of 2001 by making Rs50mn donation. Its founded to stop exploitation of farmers by the middlemen. It was popular and earned a Guinness world record for the longest running ad campaign in the world. In 2013, Amul was named the Most Trusted brand in the Food and Beverages sector. AMUL is also the largest exporter of dairy products in the country.
