Inspirational Author Visits KCMS

Kao Kaila Yang, author of the book The Latehomecomer, paid a special visit to the staff and students of Kings Canyon Middle School. She shared the struggles she faced in life and how she pushed through to achieve her dream of becoming a writer. My grandmother was worried nobody would remember her, was the reason Yang chose to tell her story in her book The Latehomecomer. One of the stories she read was one her grandmother used to tell her about the Tiger and Yer. Yangs stories were very emotional, touching the hearts and inspiring the students and adults that were able to meet her.

Book Review: Divergent

A popular book that kids are reading around campus is called Divergent by Veronica Roth. The main character, Beatrice Prior, is faced with a difficult choice : her family or the group she has admired from a distance. KCMS ELA Classes Practice with Socratic Seminars

Every 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts class is practicing with Socratic Seminars this year. This high -level activity prepares students to collaborate and communicate with one another. The 7th graders just finished their seminars using the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry. The important thing is that this task prepares students for college and the workplace. It is great, because everyone has their own opinions, and they actually get a choice to persuade other students in an organized and professional way.

by Sophia M. and Juan A.

The 8th grade ELA classes had a culminating Socratic Seminar last Friday, using the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. They have been practicing them throughout the year. Students prepared by developing their own high-level questions focused on their essential question for the unit. This allows students to voice their opinions about important issues in the novel and helps them gather ideas for the essay they write afterwards.

Interview with Mrs. Lor

A Safe Chat with Anton and Jamar

by Rhiana R. We all know Anton and have seen him around campus helping students stay safe, but there are things that people dont know about this wonderful guy. Anton has worked at this school for 5 years. He also has a business promoting events, is a professional bodyguard, and teaches karate! That must be exciting! He said he likes to look at concert schedules with his wife and go to jazz concerts all over the world! I asked what made him want to do this job, and he said, When I was managing a restaurant, I was asked if I wanted to work for a school district, and I immediately agreed! He is glad he took the job and gets to be here at KCMS. Well, now that we know about Anton, lets get to know a little about Jamar, too! Did you know Jamar has worked here for 2 years? Jamar is also a Varsity basketball coach for Roosevelt High School. He would love to be a college basketball coach some day. He says he loves his job, because of the interaction with the youth, which is very important for their futures. For fun, Jamar likes to hang out with family and watch a lot of sports. Anton and Jamar are amazing members of the KC staff and we are lucky to have them keeping us safe!

When Mrs. Lor was younger, she wanted to be a Pediatrician but later realized that her passion was to work with students. She knew she wanted to be a counselor when she was in high school. Her counselor really motivated her to pursue a college education. This inspired her and she knew that after college, she would come back and work in education to encourage and motivate students the way her counselor had done. As a social worker, she gets the opportunity to work with students who grow up in similar situations to hers and she enjoys motivating them to pursue their goals. The best thing about her job is getting to build relationships with her students. She loves talking to her

students and learning about whats important in their lives. She also likes getting to learn new words that kids use, so she can use them around her cousins who are the same age and still be cool. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her HUGE family. They go out to eat and have dinner together on Sundays. Her favorite quote is, You must be the change you wish to see in the world, by Mahatma Gandhi.

Connecting with Parents at Parent University

by Dionicio B. and Orlando M.
Kings Canyons Parent University is a program where parents can come to the school to learn how to help their child succeed and how to stay connected to the events going on around the campus. Parents discuss topics about how to make sure their kids come to school on time, prepared, and ready to learn, They also discuss ways that they can help their child at home so that they could do better in school. They also help teachers by coming up with ways that teachers could help support them in the classroom. Staying in touch with parents is something that the staff at KCMS values highly. Working together, the parents, students, and teachers have one goal in mind and that is to see every student at KCMS be successful.

The girls soccer team did pretty good this year, actually really good for beginners. Only about two or three girls have a background in soccer and the rest were beginners, playing with all their might. The girls say that even if they lost most games, they had fun playing at this tough sport and they cant wait to play in high school. A big thanks to Mrs. Avedikian for coaching the team and devoting her time, so these girls could play their hearts out.
