Art Therapy
Definition:
Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art
making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of
individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process, develop
interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-awareness and achieve

General Objectives:
The activity mainly aims to enhance the psychological and emotional well-being
of psychiatric patients. This is designed to establish a channel in expression of feelings
through the use of artistic abilities particularly drawing.
Specific Objectives:
After one and a half hour of nursing intervention, the clients will be able to:
1. express thoughts and feelings through their output
2. sustain relationship with co-art therapy participants
3. maintain acceptable and positive behavior throughout the therapy
Physical Arrangement:
The therapy will be done at the psychiatric activity area outside the male ward
wherein clients will be given ample space to do their work.

Therapy Process:
1. Gather red clients to the activity area read for art therapy.
2. Instruct client to sit down while waiting for the therapist to start.
3. Greet clients one by one and orient to time and place.
4. Brief introduction is given regarding the afternoon’s activity-art therapy.
5. Obtain participant’s lagda for the day’s activity. Restate general lagda.
6. Explain objective of the activity.
7. Discuss the set of rules to be followed.
8. Explain the activity proper and what are to be expected from them.
9. Instruct clients to make the drawing regarding their thoughts about their
family and life making use of the materials given.
10. Provide the necessary coloring materials.
11. Inform the client of a maximum time allotted for them to finish which is
30 minutes only.
12. Constantly remind client of the remaining time.
13. Praise the client for their work without necessarily destructing them.
14. Explain to share their thoughts behind their output and encourage
verbalization of feelings.
15. Further give feedbacks to their work.
16. Thank clients for their active participation.
17. Safely accompany clients to their ward.
Patient’s Observation and Comments:

Patient showed positive behavior and was very cooperative throughout the
therapy process. He was able to follow the given instructions. He was able to come up
with a drawing of three hearts with their names written on each including his name
and 2 names which he referred as his loved ones. In the middle of the therapy, patient
stood up and went to greet his aunt and eventually returned back to continue his work.

He participated positively in the art therapy. At first, he was hesitant to join in
the activity but was convinced later on. During the therapy, he was focused on his
work of art, carefully choosing colors. Client gave more attention on the details of his
drawing which portrays more of a battle arena.

Client participated and responded well in the activity. He was attentive to the
directions given to them and showed interest in joining. He was able to come up with
an acceptable output depicting a nipa hut in a rural area. He managed to explain his
work well and was well- behaved during the activity.
Manzo, Ramil
He refused to join the therapy. When approached, he walked away. He
approached the group during the later part of the therapy and inquired if snacks were
served. He walked away upon learning that there was none. He appeared disinterested
and detached.
Mr. X
He was in manic phase but was convinced to join the group. He kept on
standing then sitting, walking from one place to another back and forth. Despite the
manic behavior, he managed to draw a figure of a stick girl. He was not able to
explain his work but has mentioned the word “lola”. Behavior continued even after
the therapy.

He was highly cooperative and would respond enthusiastically to the questions. he
was able to come up with a detailed drawing of his family and life. A detailed
explanation of his work was also given.

Client showed interest and responded positively like most of the participants.
He was eager to learn about the afternoon’s activity. He made a creative output with a
“resthouse” in detailed structure and was able to explain his work
