Alejandro De Luna English 1311 Annotated Bibliography Anderson, C.A., Bushman B.J., Carnagey, N.L. (2007). Science Direct. The effects of video game violence on physiological desensitization to real life violence. Retrieved from http://www.psychology.iastate.edu/faculty/caa/abstracts/2005-2009/07CAB.pdf In The effects of video game violence on physiological desensitization to real life violence, the authors, Nicholas L. Carnagey, Craig A. Anderson and Brad J. Bushman talk about the effects of video games in emotional and mental status of people. The authors of this lab report talk about how playing violent video games affect the way people see the world and how they react to certain situations. This statement was seen before in another source from before. These authors tell the readers that there are no recorded experiments to prove if playing violent video games affect a persons behavior and thoughts. They came to the conclusion that video games do indeed affect how a person views real life events and situations and how they react to them. The purpose of this experiment is to prove whether or not violence affects an individual and if it does, in what way. These authors seem biased in their experiments and throughout the whole lab report, although some factors could have affected their experiment, meaning that childhood violence is not necessarily caused by violent video games. Bushman, B.J., Whitaker, J.L. (2009). Law.wlu.edu. A Review of the Effects of Violent Video Games on Children and Adolescents. In A Review of the Effects of Violent Video Games on Children and Adolescents by Jodi L. Whitaker and Brad J. Bushman, they talk about how violent video games can damage a kid in the way that it causes aggressive and violent behavior in the short term and in the long term. The authors talk about different experiments conducted and how the results showed that children that played violent video games developed aggressive behavior. Another statement by the authors was that another experiment was conducted to realize that playing violent video games led to aggressive thoughts. The purpose of this article is to try to get the readers to understand how violent video games are not good for children or adolescents. Although I disagree with some statements, most of the information seems a fact and because research was done there should be proof for all of this. In the other hand, there can always be different factors that affect the children and adolescents and how they behave and think, this includes their background and family problems or even mental problems. Once again, making it unsure for violent video games to cause real life violence. Emmons. S. (2013, February 21). CNN.com. Is media violence damaging to kids? Retrieved from www.cnn.com/2013/02/21/living/parenting-kids-violence-media/index.html. Is media violence damaging to kids? by Sasha Emmons, is an article that talks about how violence in media, including TV and video games affect children's behavior. The author mentions that 68 percent of video games contain violence so no child can be safe of a violent environment. She goes on to mention that we do not know what happens in children's minds when they are exposed to this type of violent media. She then stated that a study done in 2010 showed that there is a connection between violent video games and violent behaviors later in their lives. Then she mentions how some studies have showed

otherwise, that video games and real world violence, or violent behaviors, are not linked. She then states how another author of another work called Cheyl Olson says that violent crimes have decreased even when violent video games have been rising in the market. This leads to her stating that video games actually help children develop certain skills. She states that just to be cautious about this situation, parents should check the game rating system and check the actual game before possessing it. This author tries to state how violence can affect children and their behaviors although I do not agree with her position. I agree with the fact that parents should be aware of what their children are playing and how long they play it for. Grohol, J.M. (2013, September 18). World of Psycology. Violence and Video Games: A Weak, Meaningless Correlation. Retrieved from http://psychcentral.com/blog/archives/2013/09/18/violence-video-games-a-weakmeaningless-correlation/ In Violence and Video Games: A Weak, Meaningless Correlation by Dr. John M. Grohol, he starts with a question, he asks if playing violent video games lead to greater violence among those who play them. He answers this question with a simple no, but there is more to that. He shows a graph that demonstrates how violence has decreased while video game units sold have increased. He talks about an experiment done by other researchers, Anderson et al. This experiment was used to see the effects of violence on people, and if they affected a person's thoughts and behavior. The authors state that video games are a form of free speech protected by the first amendment of the Constitution. He then goes on and states that from the experiment of Anderson et al. they concluded that a single factor cannot be used to determine an individual's behavior and this is because there are many

factors that can have an effect on these people. Dr. Grohol concludes saying that there should be limits for adolescents and children playing video games, and these are playing video games with them to see what they are playing, and makes a connection with them with things that actually matter to them in life. His purpose is to let the readers know that there is only a small correlation that should not catch a lot of awareness because this correlation is meaningless because of all of the factors that can really cause violence in children and adolescents. All the statements made by Dr. Grohol are well stated, although he made around two or three biased statements throughout his whole article. Swanson, E., Wilkie, C. (2013, April 12). Huffington Post. Video Games and Gun Violence Linked by Majority in New Poll. Retrieved from www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/12/video-games-gun-violence_n_3071632.html Video Games and Gun Violence Linked By Majority in New Poll, by Emily Swanson and Christina Wilkie touches many factors in video game violence. Some of these include how violence in video games has been an issue with gun violence and how it affects behavior. They mention that a recent poll in which different options were given to people to decide which ones affected the violent behavior in gun violence, violent video games being the least selected one. They keep on talking about how some republicans would rather make a research deeper in video game violence. They even talk about how the vice president called for research after the Sandy Hook school shooting. What the authors concluded was the fact that violence in video games is not linked with changes in behavior or in gun violence. These authors make a statement that there is no correlation to gun violence and violence in video games, this statement is also mentioned in other sources, most likely meaning that there is research revealing that there is no correlation. I

agree with the statements mentioned in this online article. The authors are trying to prove that because of recent polls, people conclude that there is little to no effect with violent behavior and violent video games.
