Once the sampling has taken place, X is realized and, though unknown, it is either in the given
interval, or not in the interval. Nothing is random at this point and hence we cannot talk about
probabilities.
6.3.
If the pre-sampling probability that the parameter will be captured in an interval is 1 , then (1
)100% of the intervals that would be constructed this way would contain the unknown
parameter. Hence the confidence level (1 )100% that we attach to a given, single interval we
obtain.
6.4.
An expensive way of solving the problem: buy more information. As n increases, the width of
interval decreases.
Or, a cheap way to solve the problem: lower your required confidence level from 95% to 90% or
lower. As the confidence level decreases, the interval width decreases with it.
