For and Against Imprisonment
Imprisonment is the most common means of punishing criminals in the majority of countries. However, the publics concern is growing for the effectiveness of penal institutions. More and more people, scientists and respectable community members state that prison confinement is an obsolete way to deal with crime, and an ineffective one, too. Therefore, there are both advantages and disadvantages of imprisonment as a form of punishment. Prison confinement has a number of positive effects. irstly, the most obvious benefit the society gains from prisons is that they isolate dangerous individuals and do not let them re! offend. In other words, it is a way to deter crime and to protect law!abiding citi"ens. #econdly, imprisonment is by far the most reasonable way to treat those who brea$ the law and harm other people, as it implies ta$ing away certain freedoms. %o person would feel a full!fledged individual when in confinement and it is of itself a punishment. Thirdly, in ade&uate prisons the inmates have all the opportunities to become decent people. They can be taught something of value ' a trade, a profession, a new way of life. #ome prisons give prisoners wor$ing s$ills which will help them to find a job and earn for a living. (n the other hand, imprisonment also has drawbac$s. irst of all, prisons can harm individuals both morally and physically. The conditions of imprisonment, the constant fear, the contemptuous attitudes of guards as well as beating from inmates can ma$e the life of a prisoner into a nightmare he does not deserve. In fact, a lot of prisoners lose their sanity or the ability to behave normally after a time in prison. Moreover, it is a very rare case when the society treats an e)!convict the same as other people. The truth is that he is e)tremely unli$ely to get a decent job or have a family and benefit the society. In addition, the recidivism rate of e)!cons is from *+ to ,+- depending on the country. This illustrates the low effectiveness of imprisonment. To sum up, sending people to prison as a form of punishment has negative, as well as positive sides. (n the one hand, it is supposed to combat crime and rehabilitate criminals, which is good. (n the other hand, it rarely manages to do so or even produces an opposite effect.
