I am writing this letter to request a student teaching position in a social studies/history classroom at a middle school in your district. I believe that my education from the university, as well as my personal experiences in the classroom as an authority figure, have prepared me for this next step in becoming a successful teacher. While at Urbana High School, I tutored in an American History classroom. In this class I gained insight on how a teacher manages the classroom, presents material in new and interesting ways to engage students, and I was able to see the behind the scenes that I never observed as a student. I had many opportunities to work with the students in meaningful ways. I worked one-onone with students, I surveyed the room and answered questions when my cooperating teacher was unable to, and I led small group discussions while practicing the technique of divide and conquer. I had a similar experience at Urbana Middle School this past semester. I was placed in an 8th grade American History class to observe, help facilitate, and teach a handful of lessons. I taught a lesson on W. E. B. DuBoiss biography, a lesson drawing connections to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911 with the recent Bangladeshi garment factory fire, and also led a current events discussion on the importance and impact of Hurricane Sandy. Both experiences, from Urbana High School and Urbana Middle School, helped me continue to hone and understand the craft of teaching. Each placement had its own set of challenges, successes, and lessons learned. I am truly grateful and better off after having these experiences through the University of Illinois. My experiences outside of the university and the College of Education have been just as fulfilling and beneficial. I recently became a proud member of the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois. As a scholar, I spent last summer at DePaul University in Chicago. From 7am to noon I went to Wells Community Academy High School to tutor, observe, and teach lessons to struggling students in the summer school program. This experience was, at times, extreme on both spectrums. There were days when my experience was tremendously trying, and then there were days when my time with the students was immensely rewarding. After school, I would return to the DePaul campus and attend classes taught by award-winning teachers of Illinois. I attended classes such as The Importance of Assessment, Diversity, Classroom Management, and Introspective Writing. In these classes I continued to craft my educational philosophies and techniques. These experiences have equipped me with appropriate knowledge, skills, and practices that will, in theory, help make me a strong educator. However, in order to responsibly pursue this incredibly important profession, I must be able to further exercise and test my knowledge and skills to ensure that I am competent and capable in the classroom. I hope that you will consider me for a student teaching position in your district for these reasons. Thank you for your time and consideration, Scott Rogers
