Introductory Information:
LESSON TITLE: Gustav Klimt Baby GRADE LEVEL: Third CLASS SIZE: 20-25 LENGTH OF PERIOD: 40 minutes Project will take 3 class periods

STAGE 1: DESIRED RESULTS


A. ENDURING UNDERSTANDING: - Artists use pattern in their work - Patterns make interesting art work B. ESSENTIAL QUESTION: - How do artists use pattern in their work?

C. STATE STANDARDS ADDRESSED: - Standard 1. Methods, Materials, and Techniques: Students will demonstrate knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques unique to the visual arts. - Standard 3. Observation, Abstraction, Invention, and Expression: Students will demonstrate their powers of observation, abstraction, invention, and expression in a variety of media, materials, and techniques. D. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: - The students will observe and discuss Gustav Klimts Baby (Cradle) painting - The students will consider pattern and design their own original patterns - The students will create a unique composition based on Klimts Baby painting using original patterns - The students will use watercolor and gold glitter to enhance their patterned Baby drawing and to emulate Klimts use of color and golf leaf

STAGE 2: ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE


A. PERFORMANCE TASK OR FINAL PRODUCT: The final product will be a mixedmedia painting inspired by Gustav Klimts Baby (Cradle.) The painting will be composed of pattern and will use watercolor and gold leaf. B. CONTINUUM OF ASSESSMENTS: - Teacher-lead open sharing of thoughts on Gustav Klimts painting - Creation of original patterns C. CRITERIA: - Did the students observe and discuss Gustav Klimts Baby (Cradle) painting? - Did the students consider pattern and design their own original patterns? - Did the students create a unique composition based on Klimts Baby painting using original patterns?

- Did the students use watercolor and gold glitter to enhance their patterned Baby drawing and to emulate Klimts use of color and golf leaf?

STAGE 3: LEARNING PLAN


A. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT: Large sized white watercolor paper 1 for each student Pencils Black Sharpies Watercolor paint sets 2 per table Paint brushes Cups of water Glue Gold Glitter Colored paper for mounting

D. TEACHER INSTRUCTION: Student Art by Maria - The teacher will begin by showing Gustav Klimts Baby (Cradle) and ask the children what they see. The teacher will ask follow up questions to further generate discussion - If students havent already brought pattern up, the teacher will ask if the students notice any patterns in the painting. Following, the teacher will ask the students to define pattern. - The teacher will demonstrate basic patterns and show a handout with examples of patterns - The children will then practice making their own patterns - Following, the teacher will describe the process for the Learning Activity: (First Class Period) - First to draw the round space where the babys head will go, then the shape around it which will make up the blanket. - The next step is to divide the blanket into at least 4 spaces in which the students will put their original patterns. - After the pencil drawing with all details is complete, students will use a sharpie marker to trace the line leaving bold marks emphasizing the patterns (Second Class Period) - Next, watercolor will be used to enhance the pattern and complete the painting. Children will be reminded to be thoughtful when choosing colors (Third Class Period)

- After the paint has dried, the student will select a few areas on their painting which they would like to enhance with gold glitter. The children will be able to observe Klimts paintings that utilize gold leaf. - The last step is for the students to back their painting on a piece of colored construction paper of their choosing. - As an extension if some students finish early, they will be given paper squares on which they will design patterns.
