Bill to Allow Optometrists to Prescribe Approved Oral Medications Passes Florida Senate Unanimously & Heads to Governor for Signature
Tallahassee, Fla. The Florida Optometric Association (FOA) today applauded the Florida Senate for adopting proposed legislation to allow licensed optometrists to prescribe approved oral medications. The bill passed off the Senate floor unanimously and the measure now heads to Governor Scott for his signature. The legislation aligns Florida with 47 other states in the nation that have already allowed optometrists to prescribe approved oral medications for the treatment of eye diseases and conditions, and reflects a myriad of provisions that provide for a clear, straightforward framework to ensure patient safety is never compromised. The FOA commends members of the Florida Legislature for passing this measure that allows for greater access to primary eye care for all Floridians, said Ken Lawson, FOAs legislative chair. We are proud of the end result and commend all of the impacted parties for coming together to ensure that Floridians receive the best possible care available. The passage of this good bill allows Floridians to get the most appropriate treatment for their eye condition from an optometrist, who is trained and qualified to deliver approved oral medications, and also reduces costs to Floridas patients and the state by eliminating the need for duplicative services.
