San Francisco netted 26,000 additional jobs between Q2 2011 and Q2 2012. The strongest growth during 2012 came from the professional, scientific, and technical services sectors, which contains much of the tech industry. (EDD) The citys manufacturing sector added 700 jobs in 2012, outpacing growth in other sectors. (EDD) SF home to 1,826 tech companies with more than 42,000 employees as of Q2 - 2012, up 50% since Jan of 2011. (CBRE) A record 44.5 million passengers passed through San Francisco International Airport in 2012, up 8.6 percent last year, with even more expected in 2013. (SFO) San Francisco was named the #3 best city for job seekers in the nation by Forbes in Jan 2013, following Austin (#1) and Washington DC (#2). San Francisco was the most Googled city in the world in 2012 (Google) The California Employment Development Department (EDD) projects that employment in the threecounty San Francisco metro region will grow by 196,000 between 2010 and 2020, an 18.7 percent rate over the decade. Employment growth is expected in nearly all private-sector industries over those years. Professional and business services will add the most jobs in the West Bay to 2020, with leisure and hospitality second. San Francisco County accounts for more than half of the employment in the threecounty area (as of annual average 2011 total jobs).

10.9 Million Square Feet of office space leased in 2012. This is equivalent to more than 20 Transamerica Pyramids. 54.6% of this space was leased by tech firms. The 2012 total was down slightly from a strong 2011 when 11.1 MSF of office space was leased - 36% lease by tech. (CBRE) 3 office towers under construction or soon to be under construction in the Central Business District. 350 Mission St a 450k sq/ft tower being fully leased to Salesforce.com, developed by Kilroy Realty; 535 Mission St 300k sq/ft tower, being developed by Boston Properties; and 222 Second St a 450k sq/ft tower being developed by Tishman Speyer. Nearly 3 million square feet of office space of new or renovated office space is underway. (SF Biz Times) As of Jan 2013, there are 26 tower cranes up in San Francisco 6 office, 20 residential. 1.7 million square feet (MSF) of office space is expected to be delivered in 2013 of which 1 MSF has been preleased. (DBI, CBRE). SF named #1 overall US market for real estate market by the Urban Land Institute in Dec 2012.

OEWD had 1,637 San Francisco resident enrolled in programs between July and December of 2012, and placed 846 San Francisco residents in unsubsidized employment. Top placements were as home heath caregivers, housekeepers / janitors or clerical/admin support. Kicked off TechSF Training Academy with 80 participants in October, 2012 Launched Disability Employment Initiative (DEI) with 30 participants in July, 2012 Implemented new Hospitality Job Readiness Training with 50 participants and published Hospitality Workforce Resource Guide in July 20, 12 Began Program Year in July with 43 new grants to Community Based Organizations for Workforce Services, administering over $11 million in grant funding. OEWD RFP #113 released on December 10, 2012 with responses received on January 17, 2013. An estimated $12 million of workforce services will be procured. Managing Three Federal DOL grants for Tech, DEI, and Transitions SF Continuing Reconnecting All through Multiple Pathways (RAMP) Academy for young adults with 32 students graduating this quarter Interdepartmental Workforce Planning: Violence Prevention Designing subsidized employment program as part of the Interrupt, Plan and Organize (IPO) initiative. 2012 PROGRAM UPDATES


Launched Invest in Neighborhoods, a multi-agency initiative to strengthen 25 neighborhood commercial districts citywide. Undertook corridor assessment studies in 12 of the 25 Invest in Neighborhoods corridors, to be completed in early March and developed for release in February 2013 a RFP of $175,000 for mini-grants for neighborhood projects and business services. Launched the Jobs Squad through disaster response and recovery efforts in West Portal, Ocean Avenue and neighborhood outreach in the Mission. Facilitated the re-capitalization of the Small Business Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) through a $1 million supplementary budget allocation in January 2012. Launched the ADA Small Business Assessment Program, a pilot aimed at District 1, District 4, and Chinatown businesses. The program provides ADA assessments and, on a competitive basis, awards grant funding for remediation. Released impact analysis of CBDs that tracked outcomes over 5 years. On average, CBD districts outperformed citywide trends on the majority of tracked indicators, including public realm cleanliness, public safety, and economic resiliency. Awarded a contract for the development and management of a city-wide storefront vacancytracking on line database, which will launch in April. Developed the new Emerging Business Loan Fund, awarding a contract for the management of this mid-range loan fund, to be announced in early March. By leveraging General Fund support and the Citys access to HUDs Section 108 fund sources, Oakland Business Development Corporation (OBDC) will provide loans from $50,000-$1 million to qualifying businesses. Hired 6 new staff members - two to comprise the Jobs Squad, three to act as point people for Invest in Neighborhoods commercial districts, and one to direct the initiative. Partnering with Salesforce to better track neighborhood and small business impact and provide quantifiable outcomes .

SELECT NEIGHBORHOOD ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Portola: Transformed Burrows Street, at the heart of the San Bruno Ave. commercial district in the Portola, with the attraction of Four Barrel Coffee and the construction of the Burrows Pocket Park. Ocean Avenue and West Portal Avenue: Led the multi-agency response and recovery efforts for the victims of the devastating fires on Ocean Avenue and West Portal Avenue. Chinatown and Sunset: Conducted outreach in Chinatown and Irving, Taraval and Noriega corridors resulting in applications from 15 businesses to the ADA Small Business Assessment Program. Bayview: On Bayviews Third Street , launched the Mendell Plaza Presents event series to activate the plaza, improve quality of life and reduce negative behaviors; opened Radio Africa Kitchen in Third Street Town Square and Limon Rotisserie at 5800 Third Street. North Beach: Facilitated merger of the North Beach Chamber of Commerce and the North Beach Merchants Association to form the North Beach Business Association with over 150 members. Fillmore: Through Fillmore Awning & Signage Program, completed improvements to 23 businesses in 16 buildings from McAllister to Post Streets, such as community serving business, Marcus Books. Central Market : On Central Market, gained ground with the continuation of new construction, new tech leases, new small businesses, and new arts organization leases Lower Polk: In Lower Polk, activated alleyways and created foot-traffic for 15-20 local galleries, through coordinated weekly art walk, gallery night, and Farmers Market. Lower 24th Street: Launched a First Fridays event series on Lower 24th Street that activates the public realm and attracted thousands of visitors to the corridor. Excelsior: Dramatically improved the faades of 9 local businesses with the Excelsior Extreme Makeover Faade Improvement Program. Additionally, attracted over 7,000 visitors through the annual Excelsior festival in partnership with Sunday Streets.

INVEST IN NEIGHBORHOODS
Central Market Highlights - Demonstrated a 20% increase in sales tax revenue between Q2 2010 and Q2 2012, reflecting the major gains made in attracting new employers, small businesses, arts establishments, and construction. - Established Epicenter SF, a multineighborhood online events calendar for Central Market area, in partnership with local CBDs and Arts Commission. - Business attraction activities facilitated lease signings & groundbreakings for 4 new retail businesses and 3 new arts venues in 2012.
