Lauren Kidd Fifth Grade

Social Studies Monday February 11, 2013 1:00p.m.-1:30p.m.

Learning Object: Students will summarize the events of WWII and identify the key figures during the war. Alignment with Standards: S.S Standard: Standard 5-4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of American economic challenges in the 1920s and 1930s and world conflict in the 1940s. 5-4.5: Analyze the role of key figures during World War II, including Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini, and Adolph Hitler. Theater Standard: Standard 6: The student will make connections between theatre and other art disciplines, other content areas and the world. T5-6.2: Demonstrate ways that theatre skills can impact and enrich other disciplines. Developmental Appropriateness: The learning objectives are appropriate for my fifth grade students because I am using books that will appeal to their interests. I am also making them think critically, which is an important skill for fifth graders, by making them analyze art work that relates to events that happened in World War II. Based on the ethnicity of the majority of my students they learn better by working in groups. Since I am asking them to do the learning activities within their group the students will learn more and benefit from the group work. The lesson is also appropriate for the grade level because in the fourth grade the students begin to learn about a few wars that took place like the Civil War. As they move up each grade level they

EDUC 429

will continue to learn about the wars that have taken place in our world and how those wars impacted the world. Assessment of the Objectives: I will be using a pre-assessment to assess the students of what pre-knowledge they already have of World War II. Accommodations: The students will be working in groups during learning activities. Students will be given extra time if needed to finish the pre-assessment. Early finishers will be asked to read or catch up on other work that has not been finished. The lesson is mostly focused on class discussion, we will also do one hands on activity during the read aloud for those that need the time to use their bodies to learn. The students in this class are used to and like class discussions, which is why they will benefit from the way this lesson will be taught. I do not have any students that are special needs, however for those that do not learn as quickly as others will have the opportunity to ask questions or get help from their group members. Materials: Read aloud book: Faithful Elephants Pencil Social studies notebook Large chart paper Markers S.S. text book Use of Technology: The Smart Board will be used as a white board. The students will copy the notes I post on the white board as we discuss the

central idea, setting, emotions, and what message the author was trying to convey. Procedures: Good Afternoon boys and girls! I know you guys have been reading Number the Stars, that book had a lot to do with what happened during WWII. Can someone raise their hand and tell me something they learned from reading that book? Call on three to four students to tell you what they learned. Anthony, you say you learned about the Germans and how they tried to capture the Jews? Very good! Okay, Lacey? You learned about some of the foods that they had a shortage of during the war. Very good! I can tell you all learned a lot about the holocaust that happened during WWII. To start off our lesson today I am going to give you a brief quiz on WWII and some of the key people that had a part in WWII. After I pass out the quiz you will answer the questions, once you finish please go put the quiz in the correct box Mrs. Odom has you put quizzes in and then read or finish any other work you have not finished. Pass the quiz out and explain to them to answer the ones that are not multiple choice in complete sentences. Give the students 7 to 10 minutes to take the quiz.

EDUC 429

Now that you have all turned in your quiz lets begin learning about WWII and some of the key figures that took part in WWII.

We are going to read Faithful Elephants by Yukio Tsuchiya. Read the book and stop at sticky notes to discuss important parts in the book and specific events that relate to WWII. After reading the book have the students discuss the events that took place in the book based on WWII and the specific details that supported events in WWII, emotions of the characters and the message the author is trying to convey about the war. Write all of this information on the Smart Board for the students to see.

Now that we have discussed the book and how it connects to WWII, lets go into a little more depth with the emotions that were displayed in the book. Do you think the emotions that the characters displayed in the book are some of the same emotions people during the war felt? This will be a class discussion between you and the students. So, you believe a lot of people felt sad like the zoo keepers, Caroline? Okay, Hannah, you believe people most likely felt angry like the characters in the book. Very good inferring. We are now going to do an activity with the emotions we talked about in the book through drama.

What do you all think is very important for us to have so we can do this activity safely and effectively?

EDUC 429

We need self-control; this is why we are signing our imaginary contracts to create a safe and controlled atmosphere.

Stand at your desk show me an imaginary pin. Raise your right hand and repeat after me. I will promise to use self-control. I will listen, observe and talk at appropriate times. I promise to show respect to my peers, teacher, and to myself. Ok, now sign your contract with your pin. Thanks. If you fail to follow your contract you will be ask to take a seat and will not come back until you are ready and strong enough to follow your contract.

Stand up behind your desk and show me with your entire body the sadness portrayed in the book. Show me what being sad would look like. Now show me how you would feel when the planes are throwing bombs down on your country. Remember to use your entire body to show your emotion. Show me the cheerful emotion that was displayed at the beginning of the book when the elephants were performing. Now for our last one show me hunger. Someone tell me what the significance of the hunger in the book may relate to that happened in WWII. Think about the book Number the Stars and the holocaust.

Okay, so you all think it relate back to the concentration camps and the shortage of food during the war. Well done, you all made a great connection. You guys did very well with this. You all may sit back down.

Pull out large chart paper and markers. We are now going to do a KWL chart. In your groups write down two things you already know about WWII.

EDUC 429

Pick each group to share what they already know. As you are writing this on the chart paper discuss with the entire class what that group already knows.

Do this with each group.

Now I want you to take a minute and work with your group and tell me one thing you want to learn about WWII. Let each group discuss what they want to know, share with the class, and chart on chart paper.

Good job, you all had great answers. After we finish our study with WWII we will fill in our what we learned part of our chart.

Take out your books and turn to page 340. We will begin reading about WWII in our text books today. Read pages 340-342. As you read discuss the highlighted points. Make sure the students know the meanings of all of the bolded words as you read through. Also take a few minutes at the end of the text and let the students predict what will happen next in the text. So now that we have read a few pages in our text. So far we have learned about Franklin D. Roosevelt, the start of the war, Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini. From what we have read today what do you think we will learn and read about tomorrow? Allow a few students to answer.

EDUC 429

John? Okay, so you think the book will tell us more about the holocaust and more about Hitler. What about you Jessica? Okay, so you think they will talk more about dictators?

Very good boys and girls. You all did so well today! We will continue with more about WWII tomorrow. Tomorrow, be prepared to put yourself in the people from WWII shoes!

References: Faithful Elephants a True Story of Animals, People, and War by Yukio Tsuchiya Published in Japan in 1951 by Yukio Tsuchiya Originally published in Japan by Kin-no-Hoshi-sha Activity Analysis: I will be reading the book Faithful Elephants. I will use this book to introduce World War II and also for the students to get more practice with central idea, setting, supporting details, and the authors message. This book discusses a time during the war. It is a book about a zoo; however, the country is being bombed due to the war. The Japanese zoo keepers are worried about their animals escaping if the zoo is bombed so they poison all of the animals. However, the elephants were too strong for the poison to kill them. The zoo keepers had to find another way to kill the elephants. The zoo keepers were extremely sad by having to do this. This book connects to the standard because it does discuss WWII. It takes place in one of the countries that the war is taking place in. I have a few different cultures and ethnicities in my class so the children will benefit from reading a book about a different culture than their own. Also, almost all of my students have pets. This lets me know that almost all of them like animals. This book has a main focus around an animal so this will interest my students and invite them

EDUC 429

into listening to the book. I had a few students that like to learn from books. The book is based on a true story set during WWII so they are able to learn about WWII from me reading the book.
