ongratulations to our very own NSUSHRM Student Chapter!!! This year the Chapter was dubbed the Huizenga School Student Group of the year. It was a great accomplishment for our Chapter and we were very excited to be presented with such an honor. NSUSHRM does a variety of things internally and externally as we strive to be a leading example for other University Student Chapters. In addition to our stern commitment to the University, we go the extra mile to maintain our relationships with off-campus/online students and Alumni . The NSUSHRM Student Chapter deeply values the community and we thank you for your ongoing support and look forward to continuously making a difference within our community and throughout the University.

The important thing is not being afraid to take a chance. Remember, the greatest failure is to not try. Once you find something you love to do, be the best at doing it. Debbi Fields

& Exposition to bring all members together for a chance to connect and network with one another. This year the Conference & Exposition took place in Atlanta, GA on June 24th and lasted till June27th at the Georgia World Congress Center. The center was jam-packed with over 670 exhibitors and over 13,000 HR professionals. A few notable speakers included former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice who opened the general session. Rice was interviewed by CNNs Soledad OBrian, and the session ended with closing session speaker, Tim Brokaw. Dont worry, it wasnt all business at the Conference, Tuesday night, SHRM attendees bursted with laughter under the comedic spell of Jerry Seinfeld. These speakers and many more made this years Conference the best one yet! Our very own Dr. Eleanor Marshcke was in attendance and said the highlight of her trip was listening to Condoleezza Rice and her American way was really an inspiration. Marshcke even opened a Twitter account (@spiriteducator) during the Conference, just to make sure she stayed connected. The SHRM National 2012 Conference was quite the place to be! Heres what a few of our Board Members had to say: The spirit and enthusiasm from everyone was infectious throughout the Georgia World Congress Center-Freda Meriman, Co-President While attending and interacting I was able to pinpoint where I wanted my HR career to go and upon my return found myself rejuvenated and more determined.-Diannette Rivera, Co-President I found the atmosphere to be electric, the sessions stimulating and the speakers very engaging.-Sophia AllenHendricks, Co-Vice President We really enjoyed ourselves this year and we hope to see you there next year!

WHY INTERNSHIPS ARE IMPORTANT

In a perfect world, we would land our dream job and walk right into our careers as soon as we cross that stage at graduation. Unfortunately, here on Earth, that is a rare occasion. While you are floating back down from your dreams, we have put together a few reasons why it is important for you to try an internship before you market yourself after graduation or while you are working on your undergraduate or graduate degree. Reason 1: Your classmates are your friends and your competition! How will you differentiate yourself? Internships allow you to test-drive your career of choice and also ensure you have something listed in that blank area of your rsum where your experience would normally be if you had any. Reason 2: Economics. If you have looked for a job in the past 90 days, you know that it is like winning the lottery. Your chances are slim to none. Employers want to know you are a good investment. Chances are, if you are willing to work in the industry voluntarily, it shows your commitment and self-motivation. Enough said! Reason 3: Networking. There is a saying its all about who you know. Well, its a little of both these days. The times of hiring family members or friends are long gone. Money is tight and there is no time to play favorites. It is all about your ability to network and your knowledge about the industry you are in. By interning, you will have the opportunity to create a database of contacts while learning the industry. Its a win/win. Not having any professional working experience on your rsum is like having a bad itch that wont go away! You would never buy a car without test-driving it right? So why would you do that for your career. Think smart, be smart. Invest in yourself. Mary V. Davids, Editor in Chief

We Are Here, Connecting

YOU
With Your Future!

So Youre Graduating, Huh?

Many college students are so focused on finishing school, they have no idea what to do when they have actually graduated. Not knowing what you plan to do after graduation can result in postgraduate stress. The time to start thinking about how to apply your degree is NOW. The best way to eliminate future stress is to face the world determined and head-on. Go out into the workforce immediately, even if you dont land a position in your specialization. You may not immediately start in your dream career; however, it is important that you start something, right now. In the beginning you may stumble, but while you are stumbling you will learn a lot about your strengths and your weaknesses. These lessons-learned will ultimately help you reach your goal. You must crawl before you can walk, or run! Write down where you want to be and what steps you need to take to get there (i.e. networking, volunteer work, etc.). Remember to stay focused on your plan and dont procrastinate. There is no time better than right now to plan your future goals and your career expectations. Planning ahead is crucial to your success and is also important to show your supporters and prove to yourself that you are worth the investment. Mary V. Davids, Editor in Chief

Company of the Quarter

At the SHRM National Conference 2012, we met an abundance of exhibitors with great strategies for employers and job-seekers. There was one company that stood out the most for us, loosemonkies.com. Headquartered in Orlando, Florida, loosemonkies.com, LLC., bridges the gap between employers and potential candidates. I spoke with their Corporate Communications & Branding Director Rania Walker about how the concept of the business was founded. Walker stated that the mission of the company was to get people excited again about finding a job by opening a communications channel to connect the employer with the candidate. Loosemonkies wanted to sort of fix the problem rather than work around it. Their main focus is to give applicants a voice by providing an immediate feedback platform that let them see how they rank for a job and how qualified they are for the position .By using loosemonkies.com, job-seekers are immediately connected from the moment they upload their rsum or profile and are informed when someone looks at it. Candidates are paired with jobs that are suitable for their skills and knowledge instead of filling out the normal blind applications online that seem to fall into a bottomless black hole. The company also helps candidates to see how they rank against their competition. Who doesnt want to know what their competition is? Finding a job and landing an interview these days is an all out, rolling in the dirt battle till the orientation! Job-seekers need to know who and what they are up against, and those loosemonkies.com users are empowered and equipped with the knowledge they need to land a position and advance within their careers.
