Contemplating the liminal cake with Cheekface

Since their formation in 2017 Cheekface have stayed true to themselves in every sense of the word. The Los Angeles-based trio has remained staunchly independent and hasn’t let anything stand in the way of making the music that they truly want to make. If they want to lean more into their ska side, they do it. If they want to add in some harmonicas or violins, they do it. And if they want to bring in some friends to create with, they do that too.

Cheekface’s fifth album Middle Spoon is their most dynamic record to date. The band’s signature wit shines through on each track whether they are talking about living under late-stage capitalism, tackling the uncomfortable nature of growth, or exploring the absurdity of the human condition. Featuring guest spots from talented artists including McKinley Dixon, Jeff Rosenstock, JER, and Brittany Luna and Tim Hildebrand of Catbite, this is also their most collaborative album yet. Middle Spoon is out everywhere now and you can grab a physical copy right here. Cheekface will be touring Canada and the US starting in April and will be touring the UK with Martha in July.

Punknews editor Em Moore caught up with vocalist and guitarist Greg Katz, bassist and vocalist Amanda “Mandy” Tannen, and drummer Mark “Echo” Edwards to talk about the album, the importance of having fun, growth, liminal cake, and so much more. Read the interview below!

This interview between Em Moore, Greg Katz, Amanda “Mandy” Tannen, and Mark “Echo” Edwards took place on February 28, 2025 via Zoom. This is a transcription of their conversation and has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Personality Cult

Listen to a new track by Personality Cult!

Today we are thrilled to bring you the premiere of the new track by Durham, North Carolina-based punks Personality Cult! The song is called “Careful” and is off their upcoming album Dilated. Speaking to Punknews about the song, Ben Carr said,

”'Careful' was the first track written for the new record. I demoed it out a couple years back and we've been playing it live ever since, and I think it's a good introduction to the new record. Dilated as a whole is kind of a review of Citalopram and capitalism, both of which I'm not a big fan of. We recorded it at The Daisy Chain in NYC with our longtime collaborator Ian Rose engineering and Jeff Burke producing.”

Dilated will be out on May 2 via Dirtnap Records and you can pre-order it right here. Listen to “Careful” below!

In Memoriam
Brian James of the Damned has passed away

Brian James of the Damned has passed away

Sadly, Brian James, founding member of The Damned has passed away. He was 70. He died at his home with his family present.

James' family issued a statement:

"GOODBYE TO A PIONEER & TRUE GENTLEMAN It is with great sadness that we announce the death of one of the true pioneers of music, guitarist, songwriter, and true gentleman, Brian James.

Founding member of The Damned, writer of the first ever UK punk single, New Rose, Brian was the principal songwriter of the band’s debut album, Damned Damned Damned, which was released in February 1977. Parting ways with the Damned following the release of their second album, the Nick Mason-produced Music for Pleasure, Brian created the short-lived Tanz Der Youth, before he formed The Lords of the New Church with his friend and fellow rocker Stiv Bators.

In a wave of excitement, headed by the twin powers of Brian James and Stiv Bators, three successful studio albums followed for The Lord of the New Church, spawning singles such as Open Your Eyes, Dance with Me, and Method to My Madness. Always looking for new challenges and keen to work with different musicians, over the years that followed, Brian formed The Dripping Lips and guested on different records, while creating the Brian James Gang and working on his solo albums.

Incessantly creative and a musical tour de force, over a career which spanned more than six decades, with his music also gracing film and television soundtracks, in addition to The Damned and The Lords of the New Church, Brian worked with a plethora of punk and rock ‘n’ roll’s finest, from Iggy Pop to Wayne Kramer, Stewart Copeland to Cheetah Chrome. Most recently, more than four decades after the release of the epoch-making New Rose, the original members of The Damned reformed for a series of very special and emotional UK shows in 2022.

With his wife Minna, son Charlie, and daughter-in-law Alicia by his side, Brian passed peacefully on Thursday 6 th March 2025.
