The overlap of the plastic upper to the steel underbody became a styling cue, a “run through” that defined the shape of the car by wrapping around the rear to form an integral spoiler. One of approximately 110 cars built, this beautifully restored Carrera GTS from the Kent Rawson collection originally sold for $7,425 in 1964. The cars were offered with four different final drive gear ratios. Standard was the “Nürburgring” gear set which was mid way between those for airport racing and for racin
The basic wheel and brake assemblies were taken from the production Porsche 356C but used light alloy rims fitted with Dunlop 165×15 SP radial ply tires. Suspension was a four-wheel independent racing-type with parallel wishbones. The cars were powered by specially-prepared four-cam, four-cylinder engines dispensing 180 brake horsepower at 7200rpm and 145lb-ft of torque @ 5000rpm, thru a 5-speed gearbox and ZF limited-slip differential. The Carrera GTS engines were designated as the Type 587/3.
