Walking Along The Railroad Tracks - Ogawa Shinjiro Illustration Book Review 線路沿い街歩き 小川真二郎作品集 レビュー
Trains and railroads are such an integral and ubiquitous feature of Japanese urban landscape that it is often used as a motif and/or subject matter in Japanese visual arts as well as in animated films. Nagoya born illustrator Ogawa Shinjiro (小川真二郎) is the latest artist to add to this unique genre with his book ‘Walking Along The Railroad’ (線路沿い街歩き), a most delightful collection of urban landscape illustrations showcasing charming Japanese vistas adorned by the railroad. Ogawa’s attention to minute detail in populating his lively drawings with all the streets/road signs, billboards and storefronts that are uniquely Japanese really transports the viewer right into the scene, and his use of deformed perspective adds a charming whimsical touch to his distinct visual style.

Iain McCaig’s Once Upon a Time in the Sketchbook Review
Not a single words, just sketches ! This description pretty much sums up Iain McCaig’s Once Upon a Time in the Sketchbook, a strictly visuals only collection of his beautiful doodles & drawings, running the gamut from rough to very detailed, finessed pieces. The scope of subject matters that the artist cover is pretty extensive, from more mundane, every day character portrait studies to studied and refined pieces of fantasy as well as sci-fi art, creature & character designs, and many more. Some familiar animation/film franchise pieces are also included, like Jungle Book and Starwars, the latter whom Iain McCaig’s character designs contributed greatly to and is covered in his earlier art book Shadowline.

My Own Stories - Akira Kusaka Illustration Book Review 名も無い街は 空想と共に 日下明作品集 アートブック レビュー
My Own Stories (名も無い街は 空想と共に) is a collection of illustrations by Osaka based Japanese artist Akira Kusaka (日下明), who first started out in the industry creating album cover art for the duo rock group Yorushika (ヨルシカ). I was happy to discover this book while browsing at the giant Maruzen bookstore near Tokyo station during my earlier time in Japan this spring. With recurring visual motifs centered around the crescent moon and serene, starry firmament, Kusaka’s quiet and dreamy imagery invokes a soothing and peaceful state of mind for me, rather like a non-threatening version of Rene Magritte’s art work, if you will. Most of his art work is created in Photoshop.

Dandelion - Zashikiwarashi Illustrations Works Book Review ざしきわらしイラスト作品集
Dandelion is the second art book by Fukuoka based Japanese illustrator Zashikiwarashi (ざしきわらし), a bold and vibrantly colored collection of female portraits adorned in stylish street apparel and futuristic headphone tech gear. The visual attractiveness of Zashikiwarashi’s impish female characters are in no small part thanks to the artist’s incredible color sense, with striking, complementary combinations that make the illustrations pop off the pages. The artist’s keen eye and astute sense of stylish street fashion and tasteful combination of tech accessories also jazz up the visual energy levels of the characters.
Rome Sketchbook Review - Fabrice Moireau
Rome Sketchbook transports the reader to the magnificent centre of ancient Europe, the home of breathtaking cityscapes and inspiring architecture such as those seen at the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter's Basilica. Inspired by this hub of art and historical heritage, Fabrice Moireau, the artist behind some of the other books in this series of cities such as Paris Sketchbook and Venice Sketchbook, presents a timeless collection of watercolour paintings and sketches that will prove equally delightful to those familiar with the city, or discovering it for the first time.
Sekai - Junaida Illustration Book Review 世界 絵本 ブック レビュー
“This…is a story about beginnings and endings.” – and this is the one and only poetic description from the publisher for Japanese illustrator Junaida’s picture book Sekai/世界, which translates simply as “The World”. Indeed, this kaleidoscope explosion of vibrant colors and lively subject matter painted as sweeping vistas is not unlike a children friendly version of Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden Of Earthly Delights. I marvel at the sheer imagination and visual splendor of Junaida’s ability to weave together these sprawling images that are so vividly colorful that they threaten to fight each other for attention, and yet seem to be in perfect balance.
