As the winter holidays approach, many Brits are planning to escape to various destinations to make the most of the festive season. However, crowded tourist spots can sometimes take away from the holiday spirit, making sightseeing more of a task than an adventure.
That's why Co-op Holidays has suggested a lesser-known destination as an ideal alternative to popular winter getaways. With December flights from London starting at just £49, Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is as enchanting as it is accessible.
Unlike other major European cities, Tallinn doesn't suffer from overcrowding, even during peak tourist seasons. Its stunning medieval Old Town, with its cobbled streets, gothic architecture and cosy cafés, remains relatively peaceful in winter, allowing tourists to enjoy the sights without the chaos of mass tourism.
The area, a UNESCO World Heritage site, also offers excellent value for money, especially when compared to more popular European cities like Prague, Paris or Copenhagen. Accommodation, dining and local transport are all reasonably priced, making it an ideal winter escape for those on a budget.
The lower cost of living in Estonia translates into affordable experiences for tourists. Co-op Holidays has highlighted a package to visit the city, including a four-star, four-night stay, starting December 16th from £490pp, which includes Finnair flights from London Heathrow, reports the Express.
Tallinn's Old Town takes on an even more enchanting aura in winter, with its cobblestone streets sprinkled with snow and Christmas lights embellishing buildings as grand as the Tallinn TV Tower, which offers sweeping views of the city. During the festive season, Tallinn hosts a splendid Christmas market where visitors can savour mulled wine, handmade gifts, and local delicacies at reasonable prices.
The medieval town square morphs into a winter wonderland adorned with Christmas lights, a colossal tree, and performances from carol singers and local musicians. Some of the city's primary winter activities, such as ice skating at the outdoor rink or strolling through picturesque snow-laden parks like Kadriorg Park or the nearby Lahemaa National Park, are either budget-friendly or free.
