The Notebook, also called the Sketch Book, is an item in the PC and SNES releases of Mario's Time Machine. It contains the writings and illustrations of Leonardo da Vinci, describing countless inventions that can be read only when reflected in a mirror, as Leonardo used mirror writing. It is stolen by Bowser after he travels back in time, wanting to add it to his museum. Mario later takes it from the museum and travels back in time to Florence. He shows the Notebook to the locals, who all identify it as containing masterful creations. One of Verrocchio's apprentices mentions the Notebook's mirror writing, and once he is given Mona's Mirror, he reads it for himself and talks about its futuristic descriptions. However, although he recognizes the writing, he is unable to remember who wrote it, and he gives Mario the Drawing of Air Screw to help identify the artist. After Mario returns with the Drawing of Ideal Man, the apprentice realizes that the Notebook belongs to Leonardo da Vinci. With the knowledge of the Notebook's owner, Mario brings it to Leonardo, who then uses it to complete his painting of the Mona Lisa.
