About us
About the Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.

🎉 We are excited to celebrate a huge first step for representing Chiquitania on Wikimedia Commons! Indigenous youth from the group JUMA (Chiquitanian Youth United for the Environment) have added stunning photos of their beautiful region to Wikimedia Commons. Capturing the landscapes, festivals, and culture of Lomerío and Concepción in eastern Bolivia, these images showcase the rich life of the Chiquitanian Indigenous people through the eyes of the youth. This project, organized by Wikimedistas de Bolivia, is just the beginning of a broader effort to share information about this region. Chiquitania is a region of tropical savannas in the Santa Cruz Department in eastern Bolivia. The Chiquitano ethnicity emerged in the context of nearly 200 years of resistance to colonization, among socially and linguistically diverse Indigenous populations required to speak a common language by the colonial-era Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos. Celebrating a decade of knowledge sharing in Africa! 🌍 The 10th annual Wiki Indaba, themed “!ke e: /xarra //ke” (a Khoisan phrase meaning “United in Diversity”), brought together Wikimedians from across Africa and the diaspora to celebrate the rich tapestry of African knowledge and its free dissemination on Wikimedia platforms. Held in Johannesburg, this year’s event not only marked a decade of Wiki Indaba’s commitment to amplifying African perspectives and voices online, but also fostered a vibrant exchange of ideas among participants. Adding a unique touch to the event, Wiki Indaba 2024 introduced ZA, an engaging mascot designed to assist attendees and answer their questions throughout the conference. The conference prioritized inclusivity, by introducing micro-financing for community-led initiatives and selecting a diverse cohort of scholarship recipients to promote mentoring and collaboration. As the event drew to a close, it was clear that Wiki Indaba 2024 had established itself as a powerful platform for advocacy, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing. The collective efforts and vibrant discussions ignited during this gathering are set to leave a lasting impact on the future of the African Wikimedia community. 🎉 Happy 21st birthday, Wikisource! Wikisource began in November 2003 as a collection of supporting texts for articles in Wikipedia. Since then, it has evolved into a proper Wikimedia project: a rich, free online library of source texts and translations. What started as a historical archive is now a multilingual library hosting texts of all kinds, expanding access to knowledge, literature, and culture for everyone around the world. Wikisource contributors will get together in person to celebrate the project and explore its future. 📚 The Wikisource Conference 2025 is currently planned to take place in Indonesia from 14 to 16 February. How do you bring people together to share knowledge across borders through thoughtful and inspiring event design? At the Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2024 in Istanbul, over 200 participants from Central and Eastern Europe gathered to celebrate community, culture, and collaboration. This year’s meeting was more than just an event – it was a thoughtfully crafted experience, with each design element contributing to an atmosphere of connection and inspiration. At the center of this immersive experience was the work of Caner Özyayıkçı – a Turkish Wikimedian, also known as User:Kurmanbek, a graphic designer, photographer, and the 2024 Media Contributor of the Year. His event design, inspired by Istanbul’s architectural beauty and the Bosporus, transformed the meeting’s visuals, from the logo to communication materials, into a vibrant celebration of CEE heritage and unity. This unique event design was more than just an aesthetic choice; it created a welcoming space for participants to connect, explore content diversity, and discuss ways to strengthen Wikimedia’s impact in the region. Through its visual storytelling, the event reinforced a powerful message: together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable future. 📸 500+ photos to preserve history! The Wiki Takes Archaeology event in the Spanish provinces of Burgos and Segovia brought together archaeologists, historians, photographers, and local volunteers to document rural and archaeological heritage. Participants captured images of sites in Guzmán and Bernardos, all now freely available to everyone on Wikimedia Commons. The initiative was a collaboration between Wikimedia España and OpenStreetMap to map these sites for future reference. Participants reflected on how the event not only enhanced heritage documentation, but also fostered collaboration between local communities and free knowledge platforms.
