Join a critical discussion on how emerging corporate elites are influencing global governance and multilateral frameworks in an era of geopolitical instability. Speakers: Dr. Harris Gleckman, Associate Fellow, TNI Professor Carlos Correa, South Center Anita Gurumurthy, IT for Change Lauren Paremoer, PHM 📅 Date: 28 January 2025 🔗 Register here: https://lnkd.in/drvUEr7g Global power structures are undergoing rapid changes, creating new instabilities and challenging existing multilateral institutions. Emerging economic elites—driven by advancements in digital technology, health, and energy sectors—are reshaping global governance. These actors often prioritize profit over sustainability, exacerbating inequality and deepening environmental crises. At the same time, geopolitical competition and increased military spending have created new opportunities for economic gain, further concentrating power among a select few. These developments raise critical questions about the ability of multilateral institutions to effectively address today’s global challenges. This dialogue builds on discussions from the Social Movement Encounter held during the UN Summit of the Future in September 2024. It provides expert insights into the influence of emerging economic elites and explores strategies for strengthening democratic and inclusive global governance.

▶️ The second in the series of #12 GreenPaths #webinars is dedicated to Putting Land Back on the Political Agenda. The January 23 webinar is organized by Policy Lab and will focus on the topic of land grabbing and land concentration in Europe. European agriculture is undergoing fundamental structural changes. With the total number of farms in steady decline, farmland concentration has come to the fore as a pervasive problem in the EU. Large numbers of small farmers are disappearing from agriculture. Meanwhile, sprawling agroholdings are on the rise, representing not merely a change in farm size, but a qualitative shift in farming practices. Despite attempts at greening the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), its direct payments continue to disproportionately benefit larger landholders. The problem of land concentration becomes all the more pressing due to its connection with farmland grabbing. In recent years, a new trend of “green grabbing” has emerged. Understanding the dynamics of land concentration and green grabbing is essential to advancing a just and inclusive transition that aligns land use with both social and environmental priorities. 💡 To explore the significance of these trends, join us at the #webinar on January 23 at 11:00 CET. Experts Sylvia Kay (TNI), Žiga Malek (Biotechnical Faculty at the University of Ljubljana; International Research institute IIASA in Vienna), and Katarina Kušić (Research Platform Transformations and Eastern Europe at the University of Vienna) will explore how addressing land grabbing and land concentration fit into the struggle for a just transition. ✍🏻Register here: https://lnkd.in/dS9jaguB 📅 23 January 2025 🕒 11:00 CET 📌 More info here: https://lnkd.in/d6FtSthM #JustTransition #GreenPaths #UpcomingWebinar #Land #Agriculture Universidad de Cantabria Transnational Institute University of Amsterdam The International University College of Turin Oxfam Intermón Policy Lab Friends of the Earth Europe CES | Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra Universität Siegen IPE - Institute for Political Ecology #PravoNaGrad #ZAJEDNICKO #RISTECO Judith Clifton, Daniel Díaz-Fuentes, Dr. Thomas Kopp, Marcos Fernández Gutiérrez, Marija Bartl, Ana Lara Gómez, Ajda Pistotnik, Matilda Flemming, Yannick van den Berg 🟥, Daniel Chavez, Vedran Horvat, Giuseppe Mastruzzo, Maurizio Mariani, Marcus Erridge, José María Zavala Pérez.

Across the Maghreb, resistance movements are challenging border militarisation and advocating for policies rooted in regional solidarity and self-determination. These movements often draw on anti-colonial legacies to border imperialism. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ehimcUpn

My new article in Al Jazeera English: In November, the Dutch political elite overwhelmingly sided with Israeli football fans after they went on a rampage in Amsterdam and provoked violence with local residents. The clashes gave the ruling Dutch right-wing coalition a convenient excuse to table a host of measures that clearly target the country’s Muslim community. To anyone who has followed closely what Germany has done over the past 15 months, the rhetoric and actions of the Dutch government may sound familiar. The Netherlands seems to be following Germany’s slide towards authoritarianism. Europeans have to understand that defending freedom of speech concerns not only Palestinians and those expressing solidarity with them. European history is full of examples where repression targeting one group expands to include others as well. We must demand that our governments protect people’s rights to speak up and take action against Israel’s genocide in Gaza, as well as European complicity in it. https://lnkd.in/e33DnrRm
A disturbing pattern of repression is emerging in Europe

Profit-driven motives are delaying the just and urgent energy transition we desperately need. While renewable energy grows, fossil fuel consumption continues to rise, deepening the climate crisis and leaving millions without access to basic energy needs. Our research shows that private investments demand more public funding than they contribute, and they disappear the moment subsidies are reduced. In other words, the private sector only invests when their profits are guaranteed by public money. So why are governments sticking with privatized energy efforts when they cost more and fail to deliver the results we need? 💸 💸 💸 To combat climate change and create affordable energy bills for all, it’s time for countries to take back control of the electricity sector — moving it out of the market and into democratic, public ownership. https://lnkd.in/ebGSQ5vV

🎥 What does an #AlternativeDevelopment approach look like that is both gender- and ethnicity-sensitive? It starts with listening to communities before designing a project—understanding their specific contexts, needs, and systems. At the Expert Group Meeting on #AlternativeDevelopment in Bangkok, Dania Putri from Transnational Institute shared how diversity and community participation are essential to making Alternative Development successful. She explained why a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work and highlighted the importance of inclusive, tailored strategies. 🌍💡 "The EU's lust for Indonesia's nickel supply" – A powerful opinion piece co-authored by our colleague Marius Troost and our partner Rachmi Hertanti from Transnational Institute, now published in the EUobserver! They dive deep into the challenges and contradictions of the EU-Indonesia trade negotiations, specifically around nickel – a crucial resource for the green transition. The EU's approach to raw materials like nickel raises concerns about neo-colonial extractivism and environmental damage. With Indonesia holding some of the world’s largest nickel supplies, the future of this partnership could either foster sustainable development or perpetuate exploitative practices. 🌱 It's time for the EU to rethink its strategies and move toward truly fair, mutually beneficial agreements that respect Indonesia’s sovereignty and environmental needs. Read the full piece to explore how the EU can reshape its legacy for a better, more just future. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ehPaAw3E #EUobserver #SustainableTrade #Nickel #ClimateJustice #FairTrade #EnvironmentalImpact #GlobalPartnership #BothENDS #EUIndonesia #Sustainability
