Common was a highly regarded underground artist who spoke often about social issues and “Afro-centricity”. He would speak about the vices of the hip-hop game and how easy it was for commercial rappers to make meaningless lyrics. Slowly, he became more commercially successful and even did a Gap commercial (sell-out!) and was highly criticized for being a hypocrite.
