Rory McIlroy has found himself in a spot of bother with council officials over proposed plans to heat an outdoor pool at his multi-million pound mansion.

The four-time major winner's luxury house includes an indoor pool and spa, gym, cinema and a massive entertainment room.

Next door to the house is a golf course where Rory can work on his game whenever he pleases.

But while Rory's house is already one that most of us can only dream of, the legendary golfer is keen to add to it.

McIlroy is reportedly looking to add to his pad with a heated outdoor swimming pool that includes a terrace, plant room and fancy lighting, all to be powered by an air source heat pump.

The property, which is located in Wentworth, Surrey, already has five of such pumps, and the 35-year-old has labelled his expansion plans as modest and reportedly has stressed that as his house lies in a designated green belt area, that this is a 'very special circumstance.'

The Sun reports that council policy states that "when located in the green belt, elements of many renewable energy projects will comprise inappropriate development.

"In such cases, developers will need to demonstrate very special circumstances if projects are to proceed."

In a statement justifying his need for the pump, McIlroy's planning agent said: "The heat pump requires permission in view of the fact that the site already has heat pumps located towards the northern boundary.

"The substantial landscaping on the site ensures that the pump will not be visible from the road.

"The wider environmental benefits associated with increased production of energy from renewable sources using the air source heat pump, constitutes a very special circumstance which justifies the air source heat pump in the green belt."

McIlroy has owned the home in the Surrey area since around 2018.

Along with that £9 million mansion, he owns a mansion in Florida worth a reported £17 million.
