Le nouveau jouet (2022)
I FOUND IT TO BE FUN TO WATCH.
I do not favor having to read subtitles I find it takes something out in the natural flow of the movie. In this case I made an exception since the story line and the actors in it seem interesting. I was not disappointed. First up the story line I know has been done before but not quite like this. The cinematography, production values where top notch and stylish .
Unlike other reviewers who found the young actor playing the part of Alexandre (Simon Faliu) as not being interesting enough. I found that a rather odd comment for as far as I am concern
he is its true star with his undeniable screen presence. All in all a good family friendly afternoon flick.
Atlas (2024)
BETTER THAN I EXPECTED
Yes she and her manager produce it hence no surprise that she would cast herself as the lead. What was surprising was the level of professionalism that was on display by the entire production crew including Ms. Lopez herself. For the first 40 minutes I sat riveted to the screen never being bored by what I was seeing and hearing.
The special effects were first rate not cheaply made. The banter between Jennifer and the A. I. on board was actually a very well written back and forth which gave you food for thought. Would I have eliminated some of the overly gross scenes depicted sure.
On balance when you compare some of the other movies that Jennifer Lopez has been featured in this is one of the better ones.
What amazes me about Jennifer and the secret to her huge success is her boundless energy and like her or not you have to admire that in a 56 year old which is nothing short of wow.
Best Foot Forward (2022)
BEST DEBUT FAMILY SERIES FOR 2022
This new series is the best effort at real family programing which anyone can enjoy and relate to in a positive way. To be sure the script was written by adult writers having the kids sound like little adults but in an amusing manner.
The stand out without a doubt is the adorable Logan Marmino he is perfect for the unusual and changeling principle role. This is a hit right out of the gate that I can recommend. Go and check it out.
Splinters (2022)
SLOW AND POINTLESS
Jackson Kelly, who plays the main character in the film is wasted in this movie. In a better directed and better scripted endeavor I think he has the potential to shine. I see someone else in the industry saw his potential and as a result will appear again as the lead in the new movie ( Portrait of a Young Man) I wish him the best and hope that one does it for him.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)
ANOTHER AUGUST WILSON INSPIRED PERIOD PIIECE SCREEN PLAY.
Just saw this movie today and I loved it. Every one seems to agree that the performances given by both Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman were Oscar worthy. Just like Fences it has the look and feel of a play. What I would have liked more of was the relatively short out door sequences that did an excellent recreation of 1927 Chicago. Unlike some reviewers here I did not find it boring at all. Actually I wanted it to go on longer. All the thanks to Denzel Washington and crew for giving us another masterpiece of American cinema.
Taking Earth (2017)
NOT AS BAD AS OTHER REVIEWERS WOULD HAVE YOU THINK.
After reading the reviews posted here I became curious and wanted to see for myself how bad it was. I did manage to see it all and surprise surprise no it was not all that bad. First you have to realize that its related or a continuation of first movie called "Dark Light". Seeing that movie first would give you a better basis for understanding the plot line to "Taking Earth".
If your expecting a high quality "Star Wars" type movie it is not. The movie does have some nice human elements all to rare in these types of movies. First the actor Marco Torlage who plays the boy is a stand out with Latin good looks that makes all the others in cast seem mediocre in comparison.
The movie is clearly is not going to win major awards, is in need of better writing and directorial skills. I saw it for free on You Tube and was mildly entertained.
Life in a Year (2020)
BETTER THAN I EXPECTED
I began watching this movie expecting to be bored to death but who knew I was not. I have always liked Jaden Smith since he was little. In this movie you can see he has matured as an actor. His screen presence is undeniable I guess he has that Will Smith charm about him.
The movie starts out lame and the supporting actors were not a good choice because the chemistry between them was not evident. But then a little further into plot the movie kind of grabs you and Jaden turns in his best performance to date. I always knew he had potential despite his previous bad reviews. Is it an Oscar contender ? of course not. Was it run of the mill not at all.
One comment about movies being made today: Why does it seem that in a lot of movies being made today the almost obligatory throw -up scene has to be included. Do movie makers think that audiences actually enjoy seeing people throwing up especially when it is not necessary. Please stop it.
Extra Innings (2019)
GREAT START TO MOVIE THAT IN THE END DISSAPOINTS.
This movie starts out as a very realistic and engaging story. About a boy whose dream is to become a professional baseball player. He exhibits the talent which is acknowledged by his coach. The problem is that his parents are not appreciative of his interest. They would prefer that he pursuit a more realistic goal more in line with the family's Jewish traditions.
The drama includes inter-family trauma involving an older brother who is suffering from deep depression and a free spirited sister who lives in California.
The first 45 minutes of this movie are really great. The young actor playing the part of the main character was superb as are the parents who interact with him. When they cut to scene where he is all grown up for me the movie just fell all apart. The story line became a real bore populated with uninteresting character actors. In short it loss its soul and that was it for me.
Filmmakers often take on a big gamble when they try to change an endearing child actor's portrayal and transform it into a continuation as an adult and guess what it does not always work.
Extraction (2020)
IF YOU LIKE VIDEO GAME ACTION THIS IS YOUR MOVIE
This movie is an action packed film overdone to the point of ridiculousness. What I liked about it was the its stars, the American and the Indian boy. The boy's performance gives it a nice touch of humanity in a film that otherwise is lacking it. The location scenes in Bangladesh made it interesting to watch since not too many films are made there. The soundtrack with its Hindi rap was annoying.
I am sure that as the genre goes it was better than usual at least you will not get bored with all the blood and gore done to the extreme. As crazy as it seems its popularity will require a sequel. Break out the pop corn.
El tesoro (2008)
An interesting movie that started out with a lot of potential that eventually by the end fizzled out.
I will not repeat the plot as others have already done so. What I will do is to submit my personal opinion about the movie as a whole. First the young star of the movie Julio Soler is an incredibly mesmerizing presence in this film. That alone makes it interesting and memorable. Unfortunately the rest of the actors are boring in comparison. The script is on the low end as well as uninspiring. The ending is badly plotted out and very disappointing.
What the movie has as positive in nature is the cinematography which is professional and picturesque. The dialogue in Spanish is unnecessarily vulgar and the local dialects are hard to decipher even for someone such as myself who is accustomed to viewing many movies made in Spain and understanding the language since I was a child. What I hope to see is another film starring Julio Soler with a top director that will allow him to explore and demonstrate his huge potential . Which was wasted in this one.
