Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (2023)
Wasted potential
When I saw the cast and screenshhots for this series I was hyped to say the least but ended up very disappointed. Seeing a shifted narrative that focus on Ramona is a great idea, unfortunately the execution wasn't.
Writers of the show completely misses the witty and stylish characteristics the comic and film adaptation delivers. It's very cliche with the same self-empowered-female message you see in alot of mainstream media nowadays, although without any real substance or originality to it. Knives and Ramona used to be my favorite characters in the Scott Pilgrim universe but comes off completely uninteresting here.
The animations, music and cast is top notch and had so much potential for this to be a great show. Unfortunately that talent is all wasted thanks to incredibly mediocre writing that completely fails to make use of the talent available to them. Something that's unfortunately way too common. 5 starts is thanks to the animations, music and cast. Hire better writers.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024)
Follows the textbook and does it well
I was extremely skeptical when I saw the trailer for this and heard it was going to be a Netflix released but ended up pleasantly surprised.
It manages to use all the tricks in the old boxes and does it well enough. We have the classic vigilante cop, the classic villian, classic sergeant, the classic side characters (which was one of my favorite aspects), classic cinemtic shots and we of course have a bit of drama as well although I'd argue it was not really up to par with the rest. The film manages to tick in all the boxes you'd expect from a 80's Beverly Hills film and somehow manages to be "inclusive" without it feeling too forced like most of modern media.
Eddie still manages to make people laugh and the pacing of the film is great once the setting had been established.
Is it a masterpiece? No, but neither were the classics and the writing is definitely good enough for it to fit in with the classics and they managed to integrate the old characters as well who I thought did a great job.
This film easily deserves it place in the franchise which is rare to say about modern versions of classic franchises.
It's honestly a big shame this didn't get to debut on the silver screen and instead getting released straight into peoples living rooms and smartphones. That's probably worst part about this film.
If you are a fan of the classics you are likely to find they did alot of the old stuff really well here.
What We Do in the Shadows: The Portrait (2021)
This is episode is a real masterpiece!
Fans already know how brilliant this series is but this episode is really something special and it raises the bar for the whole series. Praise the writers... and the entire cast!
American Gods: Tears of the Wrath-Bearing Tree (2021)
Feels like the old American Gods!
Season one was so great. But the last two seasons just haven't been on the same level. Most of the time the mystery was gone most and the dialogues felt way less smarter, less punchier and less tense. Same with the chemistry between Shadow and Laura.
However, this final really felt like the first season to me. Mysteries unravel, very intriguing dialogues and for the first time since season one, I actually can't wait to see where Shadows and Lauras relationship is going.
Only bad thing is we're probably going to have to wait until 2023 for season four.
Wiseguy (1987)
Some of the worst "wiseguys" I've seen.
I really don't understand all the great reviews, these people couldn't possible have seen other mafia films.
This guy is supposed to be undercover and yet he calls he's superior with the other guys only a few feet away. He's arrested for shooting explosives and then make bail like nothing happened and no one question him. He kisses the boss's daughter, that'll definitely get him closer to the guys.
When being caught calling the feds from a phone booth the guy who caught him beat him with a pistol in the head through the window instead of just shooting him. They're gonna execute an FBI agent and shoot him ONCE in the chest, walk up to check if he's dead, there is no blood, they don't even check the pulse and just assume he's dead. One of the most basic rules is if you want somebody dead you put AT LEAST one in the head.
I could go on and on. And oh, they were supposed to makes a series about the italian mob but where the hell is all the ITALIANS? One half looks like politicians and police the other half look like truckdrivers.
Seriously, if you're a fan of mafia stuff, don't watch this. It's nothing like real mob in any way.
The Luminaries (2020)
Gorgeous!
Many of the reviews here state that the plot is hard to follow. I haven't read the book but from what I understand it requires the reader to be engaged and pay attention. This series requires the same.
If you do pay attention to the smaller details, the time jumps isn't hard to follow at all. Actually, it really helps building up the mystery.
I absolutely loved the series and Eva Greens performance is truly amazing!
Altered Carbon (2018)
From Yay to Nay
I was a big fan of the first season and was so hyped when I saw that season 2 was released. Now half way through it I'm really disappointed. It seems like the show completely lost it feeling. I have no problem with the changing of actors but the plot, the characters and the environments are very weak and uninteresting compared to the first season. It almost feels like they changed the genre and I'm watching a different type of show.
I almost wanna go back and watch season one just to wash away the bad smell towards the series.
I'd probably rate the S1 with 10/10 but because S2 I have no choice but to give it a weak 5/10. Maybe that's even too generous of a rating.
